My brother worked for a meat packer in the 1970s. He earned $22/hr while I was earning $2.50 in a factory job. The minimum wage was around $2/hr.

Perhaps but this is the way it has been since I worked for a home builder in the 90s. He was careful who he hired, going the extra steps to make sure they were legal but some of the sub-contractors were not as careful and their employees would often harass his employees.

It was not a race thing because they would go after a legal Hispanic as fast as they would an American born.

I got the impression that a lot of the guys were giving their "boss illegal" part of their paycheck as protection money.
