RFK & Congessman Spar Over Fluoride [semi-satire]
Semi-News/Semi-Satire ^ | 18 May 2025 | John Semmens

In testimony before the Congressional Committee on Appropriations this week, Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F Kennedy, Jr. wrangled with Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Id) over whether governments should be adding fluoride to drinking water.

Simpson questioned whether Kennedy's opposition to fluoridating was wise, saying "as a dentist I am acutely aware of statistics showing that where water is fluoridated cavities are rarer. I fear that removing it will lead to an epidemic of rotting teeth among our population. Are you indifferent to this risk?"

Kennedy responded saying "the National Toxicity Program issued a report in August 2024, a meta review of all the science that now exists on fluoride, and showed a direct inverse correlation between fluoride exposure dose and lower IQ. We also now know that virtually all the benefit from fluoride is from topical applications, and we can get that through mouthwashes and fluoridated toothpastes. There is no need to force feed it to everyone who drinks tap water. Since we have less toxic ways of using fluoride to fight tooth decay, it is foolish to bear the risk of lowering people's intelligence by feeding them fluoride."

"I'm not sure that's a good trade-off," Simpson said. "The IQ connection is only a correlation. Even if fluoride does lower IQ the advancements made in artificial intelligence lessens the importance of being smart. On the other hand, having strong teeth is important for enjoying good food. I think fluoridation is good for us all."

An inverse correlation between fluoride exposure dose and lowered IQ would imply that fluoride increases IQ. Perhaps whoever wrote this didn’t get enough?

What a profoundly stupid statement!

I caught that too. To be fair, that's not a written quote, but an oral statement from RFKJr. I'll cut him some slack for flubbing a bit when answering questions during a heated argument. It's analogous to me hoping my fellow FReepers don't misjudge me for an occasional misstaken fawlty typeo error. I

We’re double medicating here...since most toothpastes contain flouride....AND they have annual treatments for kids also.

From what I read, fluoride is both good & bad. If you have no natural teeth left then it won’t likely help your teeth, so at that point I would guess it would likely be best to avoid it.
