In my knife collection I have one of the models that the unit uses, or used to, like the open shirts it has an unnecessary Latin flair and would not be my first choice for a military/fighting knife.
No matter what though, I would think they are a useful asset for Spain in an emergency.

I heard that based on the picture Pete Buttigieg has put in an application. But that could be just a rumor.

OK I watched it. They may well me a disciplined fighting outfit, but it looked a lot like an Italian war comedy; the goat is a nice touch.

Quirk is a peculiarity of action, behavior, or personality. That'd be it.

"The Spanish Legion was modeled after the French Foreign Legion yet it has several significant differences. Although the enlisted ranks of the French Foreign Legion are composed entirely of non-French citizens, the members of the Spanish Legion are almost entirely Spaniards...." This guy's an idiot.
The Légion étrangère has always accepted Frenchmen as enlisted recruits. Until 2010, it was standard practice to erase the recruit's past identity and give him a new one (called anonymat) anyway. All you had to do was pretend to be a different flavor of Francophone (Swiss, Belgian or Québécois, etc).
And since WWI, after a period of service (it's now three years), a Legionnaire could be made a French citizen, which blows the whole "not a French citizen" bit out of the water.
On top of which, I don't know the year but for at least a couple of decades the ban on Frenchmen joining the Legion has been abolished.
This guy's been watching too many Gary Cooper movies.
