Suicide doesn’t end the pain, it just gives it to the ones you love.

In what reality can one compare General MacArthur with a grunge rocker?

Kurt died in 1994. That would be 30 years after MacArthur.

Thank you. Beat me to the point, but I totally agree.

...singer Kury Cobain died by a self inflicted gunshot to the head. I am pretty sure it was Courtney-inflicted.

Don’t really understand the “pain” of being wealthy and famous...but I know he had enough resources to get out of the limelight and get himself mental health. It’s a shame that he left his daughter without a father.
MacArthur, on the other hand, saw far worse circumstances than Cobain could have ever dreamed of.

He does. Down Under is a very alternate reality land.

Kurt was a snotty little brat indicative of his generation’s obsession with playing the unloved victim.

The poor and unknown and hold on to the hope that wealth and fame will make them happy.
The rich and famous have discovered that wealth and fame do not make them happy only more miserable.
The hole in one’s soul can not be self filled.

When the Japanese invaded the Philippines MacArthur had done little to prepare for it. Why he got a medal of honor for retreating to Australia in a PT boat I'll never understand. In the end, he was just a demented old egomaniac. Yes, he was a brilliant military strategist, but I don't think he was among the best of that time.

Why compare the death of a famous general with the suicide of a druggie diagnosed with bipolar disorder?
Nothing to see here. Move on...

Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see...
that suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.

In the early decades of the 20th century most of the elite in the State, War and Navy Departments looked East to Europe.
Douglas McArthur was one whose interest lay to the West, Japan and the rest of Asia.

Cobain was buried in a pet cemetary and he shall return...

I would say it differently, thus:
“Suicide doesn’t end the pain, it just gives it to the ones who love you.”

Why he got a medal of honor for retreating to Australia in a PT boat I'll never understand.Laying on the medals is a time-proven way to paper-over a military disaster. See Lynch, Jessica and Tillman, Pat. Don't misunderstand -- I'm not criticizing either, but the medals were primarily an attempt to shape the public debate.

“MacArthur had done little to prepare for it.”
That is not true. There was a plan in place to retreat, as was done, and hold till relieved. Roosevelt and Marshall decided that Europe was more important. MacArthur was prepared to stay, along with his family, but Roosevelt ORDERED, him to go to Australia. Compare the battle for the Philippines to Singapore.
