President Donald Trump said he “would love” to run against former President Barack Obama for a third term.
On Monday, while signing executive orders, Trump was asked by a reporter if “there was a thought” the Democratic Party could run Obama against him if he tried running for a third term. Trump seemed to welcome the challenge.
“I would love that,” he responded. “Boy, I’d love that. That would be a good one. I’d like that,” Trump added, saying people were asking him to run but that he hadn’t looked into it.
“They do say there’s a way you can do it, but I don’t know about that,” he continued, boasting of his accomplishments at the beginning of his second administration.
The precedent set by George Washington meant no president served more than two terms until Franklin D. Roosevelt, who served four terms. The states ratified the 22nd Amendment in 1951, banning presidents from running for a third term.
Trump would be unlikely to secure enough votes to pass a constitutional amendment reversing the 22nd Amendment, with some within the Republican Party itself likely to oppose the measure.
Trump told NBC News on Sunday that he wasn’t joking about the prospect of a third term and that there are “methods” to go about it. However, he remained evasive on the topic, saying he preferred to focus on the present.

“They do say there’s a way you can do it”
And who exactly are “they”?
You know...them.
No third terms for anyone .
Not even if they cloned George Washington
Be careful what you ‘wish’ for.
FDR’s 4th was cut short.
So a prodding reporter starts the “rumor”...or whatever you want to call it...”a slow day”...
Trump vs. Obama. This argument is silly.
And that’s because there’s no one has considered Bush II challenging Trump in the Republican primary or Bill Clinton challenging Obama in the Democrat primary.
You might want Trump vs. Obama. You might get W vs. Slick Willy.
🙂
I think the Trumpster has a greater Mind still than Br0nc0.
I don’t think The Won wants to go up against him.
You know.
I will not vote for a 3rd term regardless if who it is.
The Constitutional language prohibits anyone from being ELECTED president more than twice. There’s no actual limit to the number of years any one person can SERVE as president. That’s the potential loophole that might allow Trump (or Obama, Bush or Clinton) to become president for a third term.
The main method being tossed around at the moment is for Trump to run as the VP of the ticket and once sworn in, to have the top of the ticket step down, which would elevate Trump to the presidency without having been ELECTED to the presidency. Along similar lines, the same result could, in theory, be achieved without him even running. If he were somehow elected Speaker of the House once his current term is over, he would become president upon both the president and vice president resigning simultaneously.
The methods discusses above are longshots, and they would have to have the cooperation of a placeholder presidential candidate in the first instance as well as a Republican Congress and VP candidate in the second. But they are seemingly legal. A Constitutional Amendment would be another option.
Obama would win. It’s the voters. They go for the flash.
It would be the OJ trial all over again.
“No third terms for anyone”
Yeah, really these are terrible ideas!
Trump won’t run again.
The language in the 22nd Amendment is very clear and the theories about loopholes & the machinations to get a third term are ridiculous.
It isn’t going to happen, but the 3rd term ‘talk’ is very humorous.
I agree. I think he’s trolling his haters.
LOL!
It’s all trolling. President Trump knows he can’t serve a third term.
He understands American Civics. Too bad more don’t.
>>”The language in the 22nd Amendment is very clear..”
Yes it IS very clear. It says that no person shall be ELECTED to the office of the President more than twice. As far as the possibility of SERVING more than 2 terms, it is very UNCLEAR. Here’s the relevant text:
“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.”
Now maybe those who wrote the amendment meant that no one should serve more than two full terms. But if they did, then the amendment is was poorly written and far from clear. Being clear means there’s no ambiguity or room for alternative interpretation. That’s definitely not the case with the 22nd Amendment. The Amendment makes no explicit restriction on how long a person can serve as president, just how many times he can be elected. That’s the only thing clear about it. If you want to read things into it that aren’t there, be my guest.
If you want to read things into it that aren’t there, be my guest.

It’s very unlikely that Trump would be appointed to a 3rd term, no matter the creativity of some people who would like this to happen. Especially since he’ll most likely still be the President when the 2028 election is taking place.
The last President not elected to the Presidency, was Ford who was VP when Nixon resigned. He only became VP because Agnew had already resigned, it took both the House and Senate to approve the new VP.
“Keep Dreaming.”
