How to Have a Healthy Relationship with Money

Do you consider yourself rich in this present age? Here in the U.S., there’s always someone wealthier than us, so it’s easy not to think of ourselves as rich. After all, you probably didn’t take a rocket to space - like Jeff Bezos.

However, if you consider the U.S., it’s one of the wealthiest nations ever in the history of the earth. The truth is, most of us reading this blog post do qualify as rich in this present age...

What are the rich to do besides just enjoy their wealth? Do good. Each one of us should be always on the lookout for opportunities to do good in the world. We shouldn’t just be rich financially, we should be rich in good works as well. We can use our financial riches to enable our good works and the good that we do.

One way that we can combine enjoying our wealth with doing good works is by being generous.

Numerous studies have found that generosity impacts the giver in many positive ways, from higher self-esteem and happiness to better health and a longer life. Paul encourages us to live with an open hand instead of a clenched fist, trying to hold on to what God has so freely given us.

What is the result of living this way? Refraining from pride, putting our hope in God instead of riches, and being generous in good works? When we do that, we are storing up treasures in heaven, building a strong foundation for the future. That is how we take hold of that which is truly life.

God asks us to live this way, not because he’s demanding of great sacrifice, but because he knows that it is how we are most satisfied and find the most joy.

Wealth is not a zero sum game. Everyone in the world could be more wealthy if their governments were not thieves.

The number one secret of money, I think, is that money is designed to be put in some kind of container because you can’t hold onto it otherwise. Putting it to work the moment you have it is the best kind of container.

All the chattels I own would not pay for a surgery a surgeon can do in three hours.

A Georgetown house built for an Irish canal worker would now cost more than what many DC lawyers could pay.

Thank you. Enjoyed the read.

Giving is truly the most satisfying. Fruit of the Spirit.

It doesn't have to be costly. A surprise meal for a neighbor. Clean out your closet for a community member suffering a house fire. Just giving away a smile to an unknown passerby is rewarding.

“The Oklahoma Standard “ maybe the media started that term or a politico after the bombing, I can't remember

As a Canadian I can tell you we are America’s poor neighbor. My wife’s sisters make about twice as much in their family as we do, which causes expectations problems. We have good jobs, it is just that money doesn’t go very far in Canada. Basically we are middle class but working paycheck to paycheck.

I have been giving some thoughts to this and the role of the Catholic Church. It seemed like it treated the peasant folk as children. If Luther and the reformers never came onto the scene, would we be as advanced as we are now?

Recognize it as the tool it is and use it as a means to an end and not an end in itself.
