Australian universities in panic mode after Trump cuts funding for down-under research.

When the Trump administration ended funding for seven Australian universities, the schools down under panicked and urged the prime minister to hold an emergency meeting to figure out how they would stay funded.

It might not surprise you to know that your tax dollars are funding research in foreign universities. However, you might be surprised by just how much American funds are used to finance universities around the world, even in supposedly developed nations.

The cut in funding could leave a $600 million hole in the efforts of Australian researchers, with the U.S. being the largest research partner of Australia.

$600 million!

How does that compare to what Australia spends on its own research universities?

Australia spent $3.6 billion ($2.6 billion U.S.) on research grants in 2022.

In other words, we're funding almost a quarter of all research done in Australian universities.

Meanwhile, Australia's public debt to GDP ratio is 49%, and America's is 121.9%.

Why are we making a first-world nation richer while we drown in debt?

The madness must end!

And thanks to President Trump's policies on gender and China, it is.

According to reports, the Trump administration ended grants for Australian schools that were also funded by China and recognized more than two genders.

In general, we are in way more debt per capita than the countries we constantly give money to. We are being robbed blind. The reality is our debt burden is already too great to overcome. We are going to have to go through a complete collapse, default, and rebuild. We will take the world with us. Approx. 2034 or so, is going to be a very rough time for the world.

Madness. This is the kind of thing out-of-control government does - squander money belonging to hard-working private citizens. And our Congress, which is supposed to control our spending, did nothing at all to stop it. It took an outsider to finally bring this to light. We are doomed - the outsider will return soon enough to his car and rocket business, and we will still have the grifters squandering our money.

The notion of "moral hazard" is so applicable, Once "free money" is asserted and then relied upon -- other people's money, whether from taxation or debt -- then the "system" is severely skewed.

Spending money not your won is easy. Demanding more then becomes normal. And finally, when money not your own is "taken away," the moral hazard becomes apparent.

The system can be within a family wherein adult children demand to be supported, to a group in which those who contribute less demand control of spending, to schools, to cities and counties, to states and to whole nations.

When "free money" isn't so free anymore, then hoaxed are floated, such as money for climate change. but it all comes down to income transfer. This is a fundamental tenet of Marxism, as of simple corruption and thievery.

"Free money" need be reined in, such that true charity is indeed charity freely given, and middlemen dependent on the free money system are driven out. As the line goes, "a brood of vipers."

Agree. The absurdity of foreign schools, businesses and government reliance on US money is disgusting yet the headlines attempt to make it not inhumane or not right to cut it.

Frans de Waal made some very fine observations, and the "equity" experiments seemed all too "human." Did you notice the "cucumber" money pounding on the table midway through? Quite like today's politics.

I got a kick out of the comments. A reply to a foolish one says "go debate capitalism with the monkey bro!" Now there's a grape to a cucumber. :) Thanks for the link.

Why in the hell do we have to pay them for anything? I’m tired of it and I’m broke.

“Australia spent $3.6 billion ($2.6 billion U.S.) on research grants in 2022.”

A better question for this article: How much of Australian funded research grants went to US Universities? My money is on $0.

Are there no American universities that could be doing this research? Why are we bankrolling Australian universities instead of our own?

Why are we sending money to foreign countries to do “research?” Let them spend their own taxpayers money, not ours.

Glad this is being uncovered and publicized - especially as it’s tax season and I’m infuriated every day as more and more tax fraud is coming to light.

When a US researcher collaborates with overseas researcher it is a feather in his cap and good for promotion.
