So Chuck Schumer, as leader of the US Senate for ALL of 2024, INTENTIONALLY did not work on ANY appropriations bills from January 3rd till September 30th, because he wanted shutdown hysteria, to get, at worst, a continuing resolution (CR), or at best, an omnibus bill that has ALL appropriations in one bill and one vote.
On September 30th we got a CR till December, because they needed "more time" to complete appropriations bills.
In December, after working on NO appropriations bills, we again needed "more time" so we got ANOTHER CR that took us to March.
This annual game has been played since 2007, by Pelosi, Boehner, Ryan, Pelosi, Johnson, Reid, McConnell, Schumer, and no doubt Thune wants to continue it (because he's the same as, and has been trained by McConnell).
Schumer now wants a four week CR, so they "have more time" to put together an omnibus to complete the fiscal year. Republicans want a CR till September to complete the fiscal year.
At some point this game needs to end.

I found only six Democrat senators who are up for reelection in 2026 and are from States even remotely competitive. Since we need nine votes, Schumer is going to win.

A Schumer “win” means:
—Federal courts are closed which gives President Trump a free hand to do whatever he wants
—President Trump gets to decide which federal employees are “essential” and which are not
—Federal spending is slashed for the entire shutdown
—Entire federal buildings can be closed—never to be reopened again if President Trump wants to do that.
But—it Schumer views that as a “win” let me be the first to congratulate him on his “victory”.

Shumer is going to lose no matter what. No CR and the government shutdown. That theoretically could last until the next ‘budget’ is passed in the fall. Shumer and the Democrats hadn’t passed a bill under Biden in some time, instead using the CR to fund government. There will be replay after replay of Shumer’s previous comments about the horrible ‘government shutdown’, but it will be known as Shumer’s Shutdown.
Trump will have to take emergency actions to fund government, me thinks more tarrifs. That will go on until another budget bill is passed in the fall. Many, Many, Many government agencies and employees will be gone by then. Democrats will have participated in the ‘massive’ destruction of the government workforce they attempted to retain. The democrats will once again by on the 20% of the 80/20 split.
