Real-life James Bond jailed for 60 days for telling police his name

Possessing the name James Bond can have unforeseen consequences, as one unfortunate man found out. The fictional British Secret Service agent James Bond needs no introduction - originally invented in 1953 by author Ian Fleming, the character went on to feature in a long series of movies which saw him played by prominent actors including Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Daniel Craig.

But James Bond is also a very real name, with many people around the world sharing the moniker of the world's most famous secret agent - something that can be both a blessing and a curse.

An example of how it can be the latter was featured in a documentary - The Other Fellow - which is all about the phenomenon of people sharing the name of James Bond.

On this occasion, a man from Indiana, whose name is James Bond Jr., had been pulled over by the police one day and was asked to provide some identification, which he didn't have on him.

"When it got to me I was like... My name is James Bond," he recalled.

"[The officer] looked at me like, 'I'm going to give you one more chance to tell me the truth'."

"My name is James Bond!"

Incredibly, Bond ended up being charged and had to serve 60 days in jail.

"The judge said that I was obstructing the police officer from doing his job, by me saying my name in a 'joking manner'," he said. "I looked at the judge like, 'Are you serious?'"

"How can I say James Bond in a joking manner? I just said my name!"

"I had to do like 60 days in a county jail for that. 60 days."

I don’t believe this. Does his ID not have his name on it? 60 days?

The police didn’t run his plate number showing the car registration to James Bond, or in the case of a rental car, he has a rental agreement with the name on it? I find the story a little fishy too...

I didnt have this exactly but I do sort of understand.

Imagine being a kid that moves around a lot and having had parents with that went by “Sonny & Cher”. At first I had no idea that these were famous people or why stating my parents names would get me in trouble with the teachers, not that me knowing helped because no one believed me anyway.

It is odd that the cop evidently didn’t run the car’s plate. Or maybe he did, and the car did not come back to Mr. Bond. On the other hand, there are cops who just love to escalate.

I’ll rate this story a toss-up.

Not true. You have 24 hours to produce your driver’s license. And if he was given a court date, it wouldn’t be immediate as depicted here, and the punishment wouldn’t be 60 days in jail!

Other guy in court blurts out?...

“I can vouch for the guy. His name really is James Bond!”

Judge: And who pray tell are you?

“My name is Sherlock Holmes”
