The correct biblical position to take on any given topic is to be discerned by studying the Bible - not by surveying the spectrum of existing positions and then taking a “moderate” position at the 50 yard line. Anyone calling themselves a “pastor” should know and practice this.
And Jesus was beating and tortured brutality to near death by the government. What’s the message in that?
No, Rick, no. The rest of the story is that Jesus himself said that the one thief who recognized His divinity would be with Him in heaven; the other criminal would not. The choice is clear. Jesus was not letting their earthly points of view make Him compromise to be “nice”, or to show unmerited pity for the unrepentant.
