Is there a VPN compatible with Windows 7?

Posted on 02/12/2025 6:15:33 AM PST by ma_che62

Windows 7, I know, that "risky-obsolete-not-up-to-date OS from MS" of 18 years ago. In any case guys, a simple question for you: does any one on FR know which VPN will work with Win 7?

I know, I know...I don't want to get into a debate regarding "You really should consider updating to the latest system." At this stage in our lives our choices are:

1) staying with Win 7 or 2) getting completely off the grid.

What would be a VPN for Win 7?

Many thanks in advance!

Brave AI:

VPN Compatible with Windows 7
Yes, there are several VPNs compatible with Windows 7. NordVPN is a highly recommended option, offering strong encryption and advanced privacy tools to keep your data safe.
It supports Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and provides a user-friendly app that ensures strict privacy and fast streaming speeds.
Additionally, Surfshark and CyberGhost are also compatible with Windows 7 and offer reliable security features.
If you are looking for a free option, Planet FreeVPN is another choice that is easy to download and start using.

However, it is important to note that Microsoft ended support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020, and it is recommended to switch to an operating system currently supported by its manufacturer for better security.

You should get another hard drive install windows 7 on it then upgrade to windows 11 and that computer will own windows 11 but you have to do a fresh install of windows 11 using Rufus burner to remove all the restrictions of windows 11 or buy a new computer ,LOL

I’d bet not. Nothing works with an OS that old, except for other old programs.

I would recommend taking Linux classes and befriending a youngster who could put together a new box for you, plus hook you up with a VPN.

Just sayin’. It’s the direction I would have gone by now, but business needs dictate I maintain W11 and Office for now.

Or, here’s a thought, you could just install Linux.

Nord VPN no longer supports windows 7. It still works with 7, but will not be updated.

PIA has 32 and 64 bit windows and 32 bit is pretty old so one or the other ought to work. Could contact them to be sure. They’re one of the better VPNs out there and don’t easily cave to law enforcement data requests.

A happy Win7 camper here, sans VPNs.

Happy with it so far, although it’s only been 20 years.

we’ve been with NordVPN for 6 years and as of today it does not. Woke up this AM and turned on the PCs and none of them could connect with NordVPN...that’s why we’re looking for an alternative.

Upgrading to windows 11 for that computer and it would own it you wouldn’t have to buy it and if you want to go Linux fine

Microsuck shot itself in the foot when they dumped Win 7. If I could, I would still use XP (I still do on one machine, but I don’t go on-line with it).

Any company that configures their software to not run on 7 probably gets a kickback from Microsuck.

I’m running 7 with Nord right now, and it works fine. I don’t know how long that will be the case. Let us know what you find as a replacement.

Might be easier to use a WiFi that does client VPN. If you are wired they usually have a port or two of Ethernet RJ45

Windows 7 was/is a very stable os, and one that many technical applications were ported to from unix based engineering workstation. I keep one box alive just to support plc’s and other hardware running a production cell. A good CNC mill will last 20-30 yrs yrs and a CNC lathe can last 50 yrs or more. Fanuc and other robots from the 90’s are still loading an automated broaching cell. And a windows 7 pc shall lead them.
