Kentucky GOP lawmakers remove Democratic governor’s role in filling US Senate vacancies

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Republican lawmakers in Kentucky on Friday removed the Democratic governor from any role filling future U.S. Senate vacancies — a move supporters said was unrelated to recent scrutiny about the health of the state’s senior senator, Republican leader Mitch McConnell.

The GOP supermajority Legislature easily overrode Gov. Andy Beshear’s veto of the measure. The legislation calls for a special election to fill any Senate vacancy from the Bluegrass State. The special election winner would hold the seat for the remainder of the unexpired term.

“The people should decide who a United States senator is by election always,” House Majority Floor Leader Steven Rudy, a Republican and the bill’s lead sponsor, said during a brief House debate Friday.

Did they add any 25th Amendment style wording in order to get Mitch out? He can only fall down so many times before he does not get back up, and it does not look like he will be leaving soon on his own.

KY is historically a state for mostly only Democrat governors. NC is treading in the same direction.

So the article didn’t say anything other that the gov is out and people should vote. The question is, is there an interim appointment to fill a vacancy and if so by whom?

WHO SCHEDULES THE SPECIAL ELECTION. If it’s the governor there’s still room for ‘RAT shenanigans from the ‘RAT governor.

Just like the law just passed in NYS under Hochul to mess up and delay the replacement for Elise.

WY has this same law. Senator Barrasso was first appointed by a Democrat governor.

Beshear is unbeatable in Kentucky. If there was a statewide race between him and Trump, Beshear would win fairly easily.

Strongly disagree.

He won a close race against a very unpopular Republican, Daniel Cameron, last time.

Trump would clean his clock in Kentucky.

My non-political son told me in the fall that PDJT would win this time, but that Beshear will be next POTUS.

Hmmmmmm.

The problem with the law is it conflicts with the Kentucky Constitution. Republicans didn’t amend the constitution, so Beshear can appoint whomever he wishes. He stated earlier that the law was flawed and that he will ignore it.

From the Kentucky Constitution:
...”Vacancies in all offices for the State at large, or for districts larger than a county, shall be filled by appointment of the Governor; all other appointments shall be made as may be prescribed by law.... “

Democrat senators in states with Republican governors should be the first ones looked at for crimes. Make it so Mitch’s seat isn’t that important. VA is a nice place to start.
