Kevin Ko reports from the Pacific Palisades, where he speaks with one family who took the firefight into their own hands when the Palisades Fire closed in on their home.
Interview with a family who were prepared. Yes, prepared.
Hurricanes last year that wiped out thousands of people. Left them basically homeless (many still live in tents).
It really got me thinking about how preppers have their list of things to do for SHTF. How even they were taken by catastrophe loosing everything to water or fire.
Yet, this ole codger did the most important prep based on his own risk assessment.
As an suburban prepper it really is just sitting with me in a way of ...re-evaluation.
WCAL Fox 11 has been the channel I’ve been watching the most during these fires. Excellent reporting.
They are one of the news channels listed in the free version of the “Sling” App on ROKU
There was one house in Palisades that survived when the entire street was gone.
Those in in the ‘fireproof construction’ business will be busy after this.
Can’t rely on police, on fire department, or on any government agency. Good lessons from this. Thanks for posting.
Cement block is the answer.
Of course you have to have a pool, $50,000 to $75,0000
Plus a generator, lots of fuel, sprinkler system etc $$$$.
Easy peezy
“Those in in the ‘fireproof construction’ business will be busy after this.”
Fireproof plus earthquake-proof.
“Those in in the ‘fireproof construction’ business will be busy after this.”
That should’ve been code out there 40 friggin’ years ago.
Florida has been proactive in regards to hurricanes for decades.

“Fireproof plus earthquake-proof”
IOW relocating to another state. 😏
There must have been some code or regulation that they disobeyed to accomplish this.
If the bureaucrats and regulators are worth their salt, they will find something.
Well...if everyone in the area who had a pool...had a similar setup...
Make one think...
For the middle class having a pool built is completely out of the question. That was old America...Todays middle class has all but been decimated...
How bad? In S.CA, many have backfilled their pools due to the endless expense and maintenance...
Vinyl siding is like wrapping your house in gasoline.
They only have to be earthquake proof because they are required to be. There aren’t any earthquakes, certainly not as often as wildfires. We have been waiting for The Big One since I was a teenager which was a long ass time ago. There have been wildfires and landslides bunches of times in the last 50 years. I will also go so far as to say that The Big One will not happen during my lifetime or the next 50 years whichever one comes first.
good job by this homeowner. maybe the cancelled fire insurance was a wake up call for him.
I have seen a house of concrete block with a steel roof totally incinerated. Flying embers had broken the windows.
Vegetation management is the answer.
What’s your problem? Jealous? Geez oh Pete’s.
This guy was clever and thought through his risks for living there.
They should hire him to help redesign during the rebuilding phase.
Check out Fyr Float. It’s pretty cool.
No pools near me. I’ve looked into covertly sinking a well by hand. (Water table is too low so I can’t)
We’re not in a danger zone. My thought was more for water if the municipal system fails.
