Florida Sheriff Tells Criminals “Expect to be Shot”
AmmoLand ^ | December 31, 2024 | Dean Weingarten

On December 27, 2024 WFIN in Florida quoted Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells about a recent home invasion and shooting. The Sheriff said:

“This is the state of Florida, if you want to break into someone’s home, you should expect to be shot.”

The incident happened on December 26, 2024 about 9 p.m. From wfin.com:

“He knew something bad was about to happen and he didn’t stall,” MCSO Sheriff Rick Wells said during a press conference Friday. “He grabbed his firearm [and] told his wife to get into a safe spot.”

The homeowner fired multiple rounds, hitting Flores-Toledo “several times,” while Soto-Mella fled the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

“I sat down next to the lanai, the door was open,” John Nuceder, who was visiting a family member in the neighborhood, told Fox 13. “I vividly heard three gunshots.”

Authorities said Flores-Toledo was initially reported to be in critical condition before being transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he died Friday morning.

“This is the state of Florida,” Wells said. “If you want to break into someone’s home, you should expect to be shot.”

Deputies tracked down Soto-Mella, who was in the country illegally after his 90-day visa expired in September, using K9 units and arrested him a few blocks away, according to the sheriff’s office. The scene was secured and everyone involved was accounted for, posing no threat to the community.

The man who was killed, Flores-Toledo, was from Mexico. His immigration status was not mentioned. The man with him is from Chile and was in the country illegally.

More sheriff's are supporting self-defense and the Second Amendment.

Perhaps all law enforcement heads should be elected, not appointed by mayors or selected by city councils.

It would create another "check and balance" system.

I travel extensively on my bike (23 states / 11k miles in 2023) and I always open carry. I had 3 citizens and 2 LEOs thank me for carrying on that trip alone. Two LEO’s here in my hometown, also.

Grady is Polk county’s sheriff. This was Rick Wells, the sheriff of Manatee county. We have a lot of great sheriff’s here in FL.

Update his status to deceased.

I’ve Never had a passport. I doubt Flores-Toledo had one either

. If someone with a passport dies while traveling, do they stamp the passport as “Deceased” ?

‘Stand your ground’... not just a catchy phrase

Living alone? Who wouldn’t hesitate to defend themselves. I intend to be the last one on that slab

When did everyone start using “lanai”?
I never heard of it until I came here (Hawaii) 5 years ago.

“Kudos to Sheriff Rick Wells. He is an American politician/lawman who is stating the obvious. I expect him to be re-elected. He has been in office for almost eight years. He is married to Lupita Wells and has three sons.”

I love Dean, but I’m not sure it does the Sheriff much good to have his family structure announced in this article, particularly with one of the men being from Chile.

Pennsylvania has Castle Doctrine and stand -your-ground too.

The dems hate it but can’t change it… yet. Despite Philly and Pittsburgh.

We have some great sheriff departments and a few lousy ones, but overall a good state for firearms and self defense.

Advice you should be very careful about….the ‘after action’ events you never hear about should be considered. The DA may well try to prosecute you, wrongful death suit brought by the family and/or friends of the felon trying to get even. It’s never a clean end.

Yes we do. Ours is Tommy Leeper in Nassau County. Wells made the same comment Tommy did some time ago in response to some reportorette’s question about why the home intruder needed to be shot dead.

Of course no one can top Grady’s comment to the reportorette who asked why some cop killer had to be shot 69 times. Grady’s comment was, because that is all the bullets they had (they fired like 110).

One of the problems with mayors and city councils is this fiction of the non-partisan mayor and city council election. It enables Democrats to hide their true stripes. I know it is a common thing in GA, not sure about FL. We have a county that voted 69% for Trump 30% for Harris, yet have a “nonpartisan” but complete Dem mayor in our county seat. We have new county GOP leadership that is working on this problem. A key member of the prior leadership actually endorsed this Dem mayor. Yet people get upset about being called RINOs.
