On January First, 1953, Hank Williams died of heart failure in the back seat of a car on the way to a gig. (He had hired a student to drive him from Alabama to West Virginia to be there. Dedication.)
Hank liberated the pop music voice to sound wholeheartedly and powerfully American with unparalleled directness and emotional honesty on the hit song charts in ways no one had done before.
He is not the father of The First Amendment but he is for me a pivotal grandfather of modern freedom of speech.
The cultural achievements I revere of Dylan, Elvis, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Willie Nelson, Michael Murphey, Paul Siebel and the soaring voice of Steve Young were built on what Hank pioneered.
God Bless Freedom.
Pay attention, modern world.
Your cheating heart will tell on you.

Yes, and he saw the light too!
Next to Tompall Glaser, the greatest country singer ever.
Happy New Year, Oz.
“the soaring voice of Steve Young”
Never heard of Steve Young, but I just started playing the “Steve Young” playlist on Spotify. Wow, he is great! “Soaring voice,” indeed.
“he saw the light too!”
A lot of people are surprised to hear that he wrote that.
I like his son’s voice, too.
Loved the Luke the Drifter album and when he was on Mother’s Best Flour radio program (anyone remember that?).
So Lonesome I Could Cry.....
There are certain events that occur in one’s life that become indelible in memory. One of those for me was the announcement over WSM 95 the AM blowtorch in Nashville Tennessee. I heard the news on our family’s only radio, a 6 volt powered AM wooden radio. That battery was charged with a two blade wind powered generator that was mounted on the roof top of our two room family home, a building that dad had converted from a farm granary on a quarter of land in rural North Dakota. I was 8 years old when Williams died. On cold winter nights the WSM signal would travel far and come in clear as a bell all the way from Nashville.
I thought he drowned in his own alcoholic vomit serving as an example to those lusting after a career in musical entertainment that:
Pro 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.
Hank was by far the bigger star but Hank, Jr. has a better voice.
My wife is the musician in the family but not a country music fan. On a long drive, she tolerated a Johnny Cash CD being played. When That Old Wheel came on, she asked me who was singing with Johnny Cash. I told her and she commented that "he has a great voice." Not many vocalists can upstage Johnny Cash.
“Not many vocalists can upstage Johnny Cash.”
Johnny Cash is one of my favorites. Also Hoyt Axton and George Strait. Charley Pride has a sweet voice.
My college major was music — classical and church. I still love church music, but never liked to listen to classical much. It’s fun to play on the piano, but boring to listen to (for me).
Anyhow, I’ve really come to appreciate country — the old stuff. On DirecTV I usually go to channel 808-1 Classic Country Ultra.
My first concert was Hank Williams Sr., at Hersheypark.
I mean Hank Williams Jr!!!

Hoyt Axton did the soundtrack song for the movie “Buster and Billie”. It is really a beautiful and sweet song. I can’t believe it did not become a big hit.
