The biggest change between the launch of President Donald Trump’s first and second terms is that he’s picking far better people to fill his administration. A close second are his bold plans to be initiated by his team.
On Sunday, he brought back a talking point that was briefly floated during his first term, saying he is interested in acquiring Greenland.
His post was pure Trump:
I am pleased to announce Ken Howery as my choice for United States Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark. Ken is a World renowned entrepreneur, investor, and public servant, who served our Nation brilliantly during my First Term as U.S. Ambassador to Sweden, where he led efforts to increase Defense, Security, and Economic Cooperation between our Countries. As a Co-Founder of PayPal and venture capital fund, Founders Fund, Ken turned American Innovation and Tech leadership into Global success stories, and that experience will be invaluable in representing us abroad. For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity. Ken will do a wonderful job in representing the interests of the United States. Thank you Ken, and congratulations!
According to Wikipedia:
On 21 June 2009, Greenland gained self-rule with provisions for assuming responsibility for self-government of judicial affairs, policing, and natural resources. Also, Greenlanders were recognized as a separate people under international law. Denmark maintains control of foreign affairs and defense matters.
Greenland plays an important role in international relations due to its position as the gateway to the Arctic, which is seen as a new battleground for trade and diplomacy between the great powers. In addition, it is rich in natural resources both above and below ground and on its coast.
We already have a military presence there. Having full control of the largest island in the world makes perfect sense considering today’s geopolitical climate.
What the heck is behind this? I’m a Trump supporter, but this does not make sense.
IIRC Greenland belongs to Denmark. I suppose if we pay them a trillion dollars they might sell.
That is a nutty idea. No reason for it.
Basing in Antartica opens up a whole new naval theater, in the frigid waters.
Greenland has LOTS of mineral wealth.
Elon: “How much is Denmark?”
You pay the Danegeld and you never get rid of the Dane..............
We don’t need to acquire other countries. That is no what America is about.
Who do I see about buying Greenland? Moe Green? How much to buy Greenland, Mr Green? I hear you’re losing money. Maybe we could do better.
80% of all federal employees should be transferred to their new branch office in our great state of Greenland.
I wonder if that has not crossed his mind.
If you read it carefully. Trump doesn’t actually say he wants to own it. The sentence above says how great the new governing body is. And Ken will keep it that way. You have to be careful when you take the moment literally.
The hard truth is that Denmark cannot and will not be able to protect Greenland from being seized by a great power. Denmark only holds it still because it has been protected by the U.S. and perhaps EU machinations. Either the EU/Denmark builds a much bigger navy and military to protect Greenland and starts a colonization program to increase the population or they have to let it go either to the U.S., China or Russia. The U.S. should never allow the hostile, totalitarian EU to retain it because they could use it to stage and invaision of America.
Trump needs to focus. Protect borders. Expel migrants.
Panama, Greenland, maybe the Philippines next. I wonder how many distractions can be put into the que before the Presidency even starts.
Greenland is a country?
A better ROI than Ukraine.
Expel migrants.....to Greenland...................
Crazy idea.
But possibly federal jobs could all be transferred there.
And Congress could meet there ?
But in tents only. Maybe a small campfire to stay warm.
