The threats to Israel from Syria remain despite the moderate tone of rebel leaders who ousted President Bashar al-Assad a week ago, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Sunday, amid military moves by his country to counter such threats.

"The immediate risks to the country have not disappeared and the latest developments in Syria increase the strength of the threat - despite the moderate image that the rebel leaders claim to present," Katz told officials examining the country's defense budget, according to a statement.

Syria's de facto leader, Ahmad al-Sharaa, said on Saturday that Israel was using false pretexts to justify its attacks on Syria, but that he was not interested in engaging in new conflicts as the country focuses on rebuilding.

Syria has for all intents and purposes ceased to exist. It will split into 3 or 4 rump states that will continue to fight each other for the next several hundred years.

Anyone who thinks “the new boss” won’t be worse than “the old boss” is an idiot.

I saw where the terrorists “ordered” Israel out of the high ground that Israel seized since Bashar al-Assad was driven from power citing some UN thing from 1974.

My question for anyone is: does Syria as a country even exist at this time and is the 1974 UN thingy still valid?

Syria was like Yugoslavia under Tito.

It was an artifical state.

This “UN” that you refer to, is that the Blue Helmet UN that Traffics Children in the Kosovo/Albanian area, or the White Helmets that use Nerve Gas on Children in Syria?

The are the MODERATE Rebels that we armed, or at least that’s what McCain and the other Neocons insisted. By the way, our ‘moderate rebel friends’ now running Syria don’t seem shy in releasing videos of their summary executions.

(Neocons - you know the bunch that claims no Nazis in Ukraine after sending US troops to train with them in early 2015)

Israel is nonetheless in a far more secure position than it was 2 weeks ago. They are of course under no delusions, that Assad’s replacements are any better than the Assad regime, but they have decimated Hezbollah in Syria, which had been daily firing rockets into northern Israel resulting in the civilian evacuation of northern Galilee for the past year. Further, they wiped out the Syrian air defenses and Syrian air force, giving Israel complete freedom to fly throughout Syrian airspace with impunity. This in turn will allow the IAF to fly F35 missions using air to air refueling to attack Iran’s nuclear and offensive missile capabilities.

Israel has been forced to make offensive moves to adapt to the changed threats in consequence to Syria's collapse.

I'm not so sure they are "far more secure".

That they respond offensively indicates Israel wants to change the existing circumstances to those more secure for Israel.

Instability generally does not create MORE security.

Sadly, there are several other groups that have been negatively impacted in their security by Syria's demise.

I still believe this is an Oops!

Israel will obliterate Damascus if necessary.

Until this latest NeoCon screw up, it was never even considered, let alone necessary.

You will note that October 7 did not come from Syria, it came from Western support of "Palestine" and the Gaza Strip.
