Germany’s Gas Use and Power Prices Jump Amid Weak Wind Generation

Intraday power prices in Germany jumped and natural gas-fired electricity generation rose to a two-year high this week as low wind speeds continue to depress wind power output.

Natural gas use for power generation rose on Wednesday to its highest level since December 2022, as a wider power supply gap had to be filled by fossil fuels amid very weak wind power generation.

...

Germany’s power margin, the available electricity supply to meet demand, has dropped this week to the lowest level so far this winter, as low wind speeds and colder weather are straining the power system.

This week, wind speeds in Germany have dipped again, while colder-than-usual temperatures have settled over much of northwest Europe.

Since early November, the so-called ‘Dunkelflaute’, German for “dark wind lull”, have often resulted in wind farms in Europe’s biggest economy generating only a fraction of their nameplate capacity, leading to day-ahead electricity prices for peak demand hours to high levels not seen since the peak energy crisis in 2022.

Near-term power prices have increased as supply has been fluctuating while demand has been growing with the colder temperatures. Germany has had to import more electricity from France and rely more on fossil fuels for power generation during periods of low wind speeds.

Germany has to grapple with higher hourly power prices and increased gas demand

Ill-considered reliance on intermittent energy plus the reduced reliance on Russian gas, is leading German economy toward collapse. Self-inflicted wounds.

“Ill-considered reliance on intermittent energy plus the reduced reliance on Russian gas, is leading German economy toward collapse.”

Germany can always buy US gas, which will have an even worse impact on the Russian war machine. Might even bring them to the negotiating table with Ukraine.

They should have thought about it before blowing up the Baltic pipelines and supporting the crooks in the Ukraine that were siphoning off the gas that passed through there.

Ships from the US can’t replace pipelines from Russia. And exports to Germany last year were less than half of exports to Holland.

Making a new contract with Russia to go through Ukraine would be a good move for all parties...Russia, Ukraine and the EU. The present contract ends Jan 1st 2025 and "Z" said he will NOT renew it. Fool that he is...it's a HUGE income for Ukraine gained by the fees Ukraine charges for receiving gas via their lines.

I believe the EU will pounce on him. They don't like this twerp controlling their fuel and consequentially their state.

I bet they are really appreciating that Biden blew up that Russian gas pipeline for them.

[[Germany’s Gas Use and Power Prices Jump Amid Weak Wind Generation))

Gosh, no one saw that coming! /s

Ya have to wonder if gas and power companies didn’t push for green energy knowing it would fail and eventually increase the price of fossil fuel energy prices. ?

But I thought “winters” were left behind in the dustbin of history since we discovered the planet is on the verge of spontaneous combustion from releasing CO2???

I have think they should just make a law demanding that the wind must blow to meet their energy demands. After all they conjured up climate change/global warming out of nothing.

They shut down their own nuclear power plants due to overblown fears of meltdowns similar to what happened in Fukushima. Now they had to import power from France which generates their power from nuclear. The irony is delicious. Germany is going to de-industrialize due their self inflicted energy cost inflation.

some people might say that wind power is unreliable...but well at least in Germany they have a good ole reliable solar to fall back on!
