The occupation of the Syrian Hermon and the buffer zone was raised last night (Saturday) and unanimously accepted at a meeting of the political-security cabinet. The Alawite Shia and Iran supporting them in their battle against Israel and internal enemies was to not let another Shia country fall and pressure on Israel. Assad could not go against Iran. if you have to split the country, burning bridges with a savior country is not a good thing.
The ring is collapsing because the new bosses are mostly former and current Al-Qaeda sunni supposedly more aligned with Turkey (supposedly) and I will assume backers in Saudi Arabia and of course the international Al-Qaeda movement. I will assume the “freedom fighters” will running to support the new government to thier New Haven, especially from Afghanistan where they are not wanted. It’s going to suck for a while.
Like Ukraine/Russia, there are no good players in this, none.

US forces in Syria are ostensibly there to, working with the Kurds, prevent a resurgence of ISIS. But, in fact they were / are well placed to interrupt Iranian logistics to Hezbollah, which is why we heard so much the last slightly-over-a-year about “Iranian backed militias” rocketing those US bases.
If you support Israel, you pretty much have to support us having those bases. That’s part of the reason Trump’s original order to “withdraw from Syria” actually only affected US troops further north, near the Turkish border. (Somehow, few people seem to know this, but it was clearly and publicly spelled out at the time, particularly by Sec of Defense Mark Esper.)
