The Political Castration of Joni Ernst
PJMedia ^ | 12/7/24 | Scott Pinsker

Eventually, everything in politics goes full circle. If you wait long enough, it all turns Ecclesiastes 3.

Take Joni Ernst, the junior senator from Iowa, for example. She burst onto the national scene, pledging to “cut pork” in a very memorable way:

When your opening line is, “I’m Joni Ernst, I grew up castrating hogs on an Iowa farm,” not only do you have our attention — you’ve got us squirming in our seats. (Ouch.)

Before the castration spot aired, Ernst was struggling to raise money, trailing Republican frontrunner Mark Jacobs by several points for the GOP nomination. Conservative women — including Sarah Palin — found the ad humorous, endorsed her candidacy, and helped Ernst build her war chest. Within months, she was the undisputed frontrunner.

And in 2020, she was elected to her second term in the Senate.

Unfortunately, there’s a disease endemic to D.C. called “turning native.” For whatever reason, it seems to infect conservatives more than liberals. There’s no known cure. (Symptoms include the sudden abandonment of traditional beliefs; invitations to “trendy” house parties; and oodles of donations from cabals of liberal bigwigs. Consult your doctor for more information.)

Over the past few days, Joni Ernst has emerged as the face of the Republican opposition to President-elect Trump’s nominee for secretary of defense, Pete Hegseth. She stood in judgment of his candidacy and (according to media reports) found him lacking. As her hometown paper noted, she strongly suggested that Hegseth is unworthy of being secretary of defense.

This is the same Joni Ernst who voted in favor of Lloyd Austin, President Biden’s selection for secretary of defense.

No matter what Joni Ernst does now, she has probably earned herself a credible challenger for the 2026 Iowa primary. I don't think she expected such a swift and harsh push-back.

In the past, after the election interest in politics and the after-election process waned and Cabinet nominees received very little attention except for by us die-hard political watchers.

This year, it seems more people are watching what the Senators are saying and how they are reacting to Trump's nominees. They weren't expecting that and aren't sure how to respond.

Republicans, lacking any consistent principles, are particularly susceptible to this disease.

She needs a swift and harsh kick in the back-side.

And then she needs to be fired.

Hopefully, Senators Thune, Cornyn, Collins, Murkowski and Ernst will allow Pete and the woman of concern to have their say, under oath and penalty of perjury.

When Joni came along, I thought she was on our side. I was wrong again. I’m as good as picking out loyal Americans as President Trump was doing his first administration. Like him, I’m learning.

The accuser is counting on her remaining anonymous, IMO. I really don’t think she wants all the police reports, eyewitnesses, etc. to be brought out.

“That is not accurate and I was a company commander overseas and took that job very, very seriously,” Ernst said of allegations by her ex-husband that she had an affair with a subordinate while serving in the military.”

That’s a far more serious accusation than what Hesgeth has been accused of. In her world accusations are facts so she should face serious consequences. I’m not up on military law, can she be thrown in GITMO for banging a subordinate in a war zone? Happened on MASH all the time.

I don’t care about Senate process, which is so cumbersome that it assures that only acceptable swamp critters stay around long enough - until now!

They need to keep it short and they need to vote to confirm, or else they will be committing self-castration by voter anger like Joni just did.

You are right, of course, but the voters also need to look in the mirror. They need to stop voting on rhetoric and start voting on results. And accountability.

One key to picking out more stalwarts is whether they stand on a difficult issue in the first primary process.

junior senator

I read the Constitution. It doesn't say anything about "junior" or "senior" Senators. A Senator is a Senator.

Ernst supported DeSantis during the Primary. She’s already on Trump’s naughty list.

With democRATs, the disease is congenital.

"When Joni came along, I thought she was on our side."

None of them are on our side. They are always on their own side and only pretend to be on our side when it's in their interests to do so.

The trick is to ensure their interests align with ours, so by default they act in our interests, but never allow yourself to be seduced by the delusion that any one of them will ever act in our interests on our behalf.

It is often too bad that the conservatives who voted for these “republicans” find out that they aren’t REPUBLICANS at all.

Rinos like the swamp just the way it is- it makes them rich, gets them re-elected, a fancy life-style. They USE us.

We WILL be watching what they do and we WILL purge the party of them. They are a cancer in the GOP.

Joni likes farm metaphors.

She’s the latest horse to beat.

Can’t beat on Lezzie Cheney.

She is a dead horse.

Someone had to step up to fill the Never Trumper vacuum created when Cheney went into the witness protection program created by Democrats for perps who committed felonies against their political rivals.

Make Joni FEEL what it is like to be a pariah in a MAGA world.

If Joni were wise, she’d stop horsing around and get back in the MAGA corral.
