On 24 February 2022, Russian armies swept across Ukrainian territory. Trump’s election heralds a new approach to the Ukraine issue. Perhaps now is a good time to revisit the background to this sordid war. The maximalist enlargement of NATO, a “tragic mistake”?
When the USSR collapsed, two schools of thought emerged in the West. The messianic school of those who believe that the Western model of liberal democracy is destined to extend its influence.
From this point of view, welcoming a former Soviet country into NATO is tantamount to allowing it to embrace civilisation, by removing it from the authoritarian Russian orb.

What a pack of lies.
“ What a pack of lies.”
*********************
Oh, Snake, you’re back to promote truth, justice and the American way… as well as to, above all, advance the interests of Ukraine.
Now here is the real history without the “Nation Building” cheerleading coming from the Warmongers.
“On 22 February 2014, in an atmosphere fraught with tension, the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian parliament, voted to remove Yanukovych from office. A new government was formed.
Western observers hailed this as a triumph of democracy, while Russia and its allies saw it as a coup d’état orchestrated by Western forces. Let us understand the Russian view: Moscow was playing the game of Western democracy and it is a democratically elected Ukrainian leader who had chosen rapprochement with Russia.
In response, the West is supporting what in legal theory is a coup d’état, to ensure Ukraine’s future membership of NATO.
It was in response to this blow that Russia seized Crimea and invested in the Donbass: initial incursions, but not yet war, because Russia does not have the military means.”
And our government, the UN, NATO, and the CIA was secretly behind this period.
This is factual history that can be proven all day long. I remember it, I lived it in real time. So did you. Were you not paying attention? Did you not care at the time? Or are you in denial and trying to support the MIC and endless wars?
Utter nonsense. So I suppose that all these liberty-loving people are CIA agents?
Those Liberty loving people were duped, just like the left has done to half our country. Right now half the population is cheering for Palestine from the brainwashing just like that. Are they right?
It is not a conspiracy, it is factual history. And it was exposed in real time as it happened.
Riggght...and I suppose all those Ukrainians were just protesting and demanding to rejoin the Russian Empire and to subject themselves to Putin's totalitarian rule?
Gimme a break!
Are you denying that our CIA has been and is still secretly nation building through deceptive practices? Through false Flags, Propaganda, and Coups? They are doing it all over the globe right now... They are doing IN OUR COUNTRY RIGHT NOW.
Lies and more lies:
“On 9 February 1990, US Secretary of State James A. Baker and Soviet leader Gorbachev agreed in Moscow that NATO would not extend beyond East Germany....”
“This pledge — “iron-clad guarantees that NATO jurisdiction or forces would not move eastward,” in the words of Becker — was publicly confirmed by NATO’s Secretary General Manfred Wörner in May 1990.”
This promise, and not a treaty, was (a) with the Soviet Union, not Russia, and (b) it was not a promise of NATO not expanding membership, “eastward”, it was a promise TO THE SOVIETS in the context of the time (the Soviet Union was bginning to feel the forces of its disintegration), that NATO would not move forces it had in West Germany into the former East Germany, mindful at the time that Poland next door was still a Soviet block state (which is is no more).
“Five years later, NATO’s enlargement towards Russia began. With Russia in a weak position, the Americans thought they could disregard the moral ‘soft law’ commitment they had made in 1990.”
It had nothing to do with “Russia’s weak position”. It was in the voluntary self-interest of the states that sought NATO membership. How could Russia have any perpetual say so about other nations. If Russia choses to be an adversary of western Europe that is a choice it is making, not a choice imposed on it.
“NATO began to expand eastwards, accepting countries and states that had previously formed an integral part of the Russian orbit.”
So the whole Soviet history was a lie?? It was not nations in the “Soviet orbit”, just nations in the “Russian” orbit? So the whole Soviet control of Eastern Europe was not “Soviet control”, but “Russian control”. Which was it?
“Ukraine was almost always an integral part of Russia, until the Bear – the Soviets, in this case – granted it a form of independence.”
More lies. The longest pre-Soviet periods of Ukraine’s history it was NOT part of Russia or controlled by Russia.
Then the authors admit:
“Armies of Russian and Western spies, manipulators and provocateurs immediately descend on Ukraine in an attempt to influence Ukrainian politics.”
Only they. the GP authors, leave out the Russian part of that, which began NOT in 2014, but ten years earlier with the Russian attempted assassination, by poisoning, of Viktor Yushchenko, the leading candiate for, and soon to be, President of Ukraine. And contrary to all the foolish Putinists that level of meddling by Putin in Ukraine, overtly and covertly, from 2004 to and through 2014 and has never stopped since.
“NATO’s enlargement towards Russia, in contravention of the 1990 commitments,”
The repetition and continuation of the beginning lie, as preached from the Kremlin under Putin to and believed by all sorts of western idiots.
The author forgot about, or wasn't aware of what happened in the region during the first world war.
There are two sides to any argument.
You simply want to believe there is only one side. It's akin to a husband and wife separating and one of them being a personal friend and you wanting to believe the other person is evil while your friend is some innocent victim.
Had the truth been told in 2021, instead of this avalanche of BS about how we never promised no NATO East expansion (which we did promise and I can actually even remember us doing so), refusal to talk about the ethnic Russians in Ukraine that were brutalized by a Ukrainian nationalist government, a Ukrainian government we installed in 2014 after sponsoring a coups in 2014 that got rid of a democratically elected government (the elections had even been confirmed as valid by EU observers), maybe we would not be at this point today.
Maybe we should have talked about how we withdrew from Ballistic Missile Treaty and how that impacts the current situation. Or we could have mentioned the gross violations of the CFE by us which eventually led to its termination and how that impacts the current crisis (NATO and our missiles and missile defense on their border). We could have even talked about how we are encroaching into Russia's sphere of influence in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Venezuela, all Russian aligned, coincidentally oil producers, and which we invaded or sponsor coups in, for the sake of democracy I'm sure. Maybe we should not have hand-waved away (pretended it's not even real) a Nazi issue in Ukraine which goes all the way back in time: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stepan_Bandera / https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/14th_Waffen_Grenadier_Division_of_the_SS_(1st_Galician) But thanks to their pride and prolific use of the Internet, even with Google filtering and ranking, etc. the truth still became a a little bit of a reality in the West eventually: https://theintercept.com/2022/02/24/ukraine-facebook-azov-battalion-russia/ (that was funny!) How much discussion did Minsk get in our MSM?
It's not that Ukraine is bad and Russia good, Russia is also full of its faults. However, by IGNORING the other sides perspectives or minimizing them if presented at all, the audience in the West was led to believe in a “black and white” scenario and where this war is about “democracy, human rights, or Ukrainian sovereignty,” better yet, this goofy and not even realistic story about how Russia wants to restore its empire and will continue invading others unless we stop them in Ukraine now.
In the West, we simply chose to ignore one side, until today. There are always two sides to a story. When you only hear one side it should make you think and if it doesn't, than you should accept you have a personal bias and aren't really interested in a “truth.”
It took two years, before the first story broke in the West where the other perspective was presented in a forum that has wide spread distribution, and even then it wasn't by the MSM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYfByTcY49k Think about that.
This is a stupid war caused by this: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukrainian-president-zelenskiy-holding-talks-with-biden-adviser-says-2021-12-09/ You can't get around that, no matter how much you babble about democracy, Putin being a KGB guy or trying to cook up some Cold War cliches. That move wasn't necessary, there was no pressing national security requirement. It was our call. And today we have a war where YOU cannot tell the average American how this war is making them safer, more free or wealthy.
Wanna bet there were more people at the BLM DC protest?
Does that mean all the US is behind BLM?
What is your argument? Lot’s of people gathering means I should get in line also? Trying understand.

Governments and press never lie?
“It is not a conspiracy, it is factual history. And it was exposed in real time as it happened.”
Never forget that the Zeepers, THEY ALL KNOW the well-documented history and the truth about Ukraine (I pointed out in a different thread how they know to stay clear about stories of Ukrainian corruptions). They’re not here to defend Ukraine, they’re here to defend the policies of Biden and the Neocons.
Which has to make one wonder why they’re here in the first place?
