The political landscape erupted Thursday evening as President Donald Trump announced Pam Bondi, former Attorney General of Florida and a staunch Trump ally, as his nominee for the next Attorney General of the United States.
Bondi’s nomination follows Rep. Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal, a decision that shocked many in the conservative base.
In his official statement, President Trump lauded Bondi’s impressive record as a prosecutor and her leadership as Florida’s first female Attorney General:
“I am proud to announce former Attorney General of the Great State of Florida, Pam Bondi, as our next Attorney General of the United States. Pam was a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she was very tough on Violent Criminals, and made the streets safe for Florida Families.
Then, as Florida’s first female Attorney General, she worked to stop the trafficking of deadly drugs, and reduce the tragedy of Fentanyl Overdose Deaths, which have destroyed many families across our Country. She did such an incredible job, that I asked her to serve on our Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission during my first Term — We saved many lives!
For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans – Not anymore. Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again. I have known Pam for many years — She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!”
Former Congressman Matt Gaetz, who had initially been chosen for the AG role, publicly endorsed Bondi’s nomination, calling her a “stellar selection.”
In a statement, Gaetz said, “Pam Bondi is a stellar selection by President Trump for Attorney General. Pam and I worked closely together when she was Florida’s Attorney General and I chaired Criminal Justice in the state house. She’s a proven litigator, an inspiring leader and a champion for all Americans. She will bring the needed reforms to DOJ.”

Despite Bondi’s proven loyalty to Trump, a resurfaced video from the 2016 GOP primaries has ignited controversy among the conservative base. The video shows Bondi endorsing Jeb Bush over Trump during the contentious Republican primary—a choice that many MAGA supporters view as a betrayal.
Social media exploded with backlash, with some questioning whether Bondi’s past allegiance to Bush makes her fit for the role of Attorney General in a Trump-led administration.
Donald Trump Jr. immediately came to Bondi’s defense, reminding critics of her steadfast loyalty to President Trump since his rise to power.
“In all fairness, I think my family and I may have been some of the only people who supported Donald Trump in the 2016 GOP primary. Once he broke through the lies and stereotypes and proved to be a populist leader, that all changed. Pam Bondi was one of his earliest supporters!”

Bondi has been an unwavering Trump supporter for years. During Trump’s first impeachment trial in 2020, Bondi dismantled the Democrats’ case by exposing the Biden-Burisma scandal.
Her track record of fighting for Trump’s vision and values, coupled with her experience as Florida’s Attorney General, positions her as a formidable candidate to lead the Department of Justice into a new era. Elon: The Cheapest Way To Heat Your House This Winter
My gut feeling is that we'll be pleasantly surprised with Bondi. The left is howling with outrage over her so that's a good sign.
Trump was constrained in his first time to placate the NeverTrump wing of the party, still quite powerful then and still butthurt that he beat Jeb in the primaries.
Trump is no longer constrained this time. It's his party now. His picks, within reason, will all get confirmed. Gaetz never had a chance and I'm worried about Hegseth (who I really like). Bondi should sail through easily, even after they make a stink over the $25k donation.
At best she’ll be a caretaker business as usual type, maybe throw us one or two bones. But she sided with BLM and Travon, and with gun control after the Afghan homo immigrant shot up the pulse.
“Was she driving it, or being pushed from above?”
So she’s either swamp, or spineless.
another embarrassing, garbage article from the Hofts and TGP.
She “betrayed” Trump retroactively?
Just utter nonsense.
Sparking liberal “outrage” (tantrums) has become MAGA America’s newest pastime.
BINGO!!! Some Freepers DEMAND JESUS LIKE QUALITIES!! BEYOND DUMB!
Unfortunately yes, that is true. Sometimes it takes exposure for the truth to be revealed, even if warning signs were present.
If every person who was anti-trump for 2016 was left out, there wouldn’t be too many left from which to pick. Obviously, A vast number saw the error of their ways and embraced Trump wholeheartedly. I’m not going to waste my energy fretting about people who used to be against him. What matters is NOW.
They are trying to create diamonds, don't cha know...
It took a coalition to win the presidency in 2024 so there will be people in the administration that not everyone is going to like or had positions in the past that are less than stellar.
... first world ‘problems’ with winning.
But the big picture problem is the bureaucracy—intrusiveness, control and intimidation from the FBI and DOJ. Unless she attacks the those organizations like a pit bull, and really cleans house—the next time a democrat gets elected—most of the same career snakes in that snake pit will still be there.
I just don’t think she is enough of a firebrand or flamethrower to clean house the way most had conservatives hoped for. The DC swamp and deep staters will feel they can work with her much more than they could have with Gaetz. Disappointed here. Oh well.
I hate to say it, but his SH pick was because she has that “Fox News female” look. he conflates women with a certain look as being loyal and accomplished.
I love the guy, but that’s his Achilles heel.
She maybe a closeted Deep Stater, however, in 2015 and until he dropped out of the race, I was probably the most vocal supporter of Ted Cruz on FreeRepublic.
But I ended up voting for President Trump and from President Trump’s Inauguration speech forward, I realized just how wrong I was about him because he proved me wrong about my doubts.
Give the lady a chance to prove herself.
Apparently the Trumps are doing that and after all the Crap they have been through I think I am going to trust their judgment.
I hope you’re right.
I have however no confidence that Trump will easily overcome Dems and RINOs. Not just approving his picks, but getting in line with all the things Trump will want to do.
Inauguration Day can’t come soon enough.
That’s really a dumb statement from a guy whose posting activity on FreeRepublic I agree with 99.99% of the time.
Yep. Did he even research her previous positions? Or did he agree with them?
Anyhow, yep, Trump likes hotties. Always has. And it's not like the SG position is really worth much, especially after Joycelyn "we must teach teenage boys how to masturbate" Elders.
“It would have taken someone of Trump-like backbone to swim against the tide...”
Bondi didn’t. Maybe had she and others had a backbone, we have missed a lot of the abuse that came our way afterwards. We need an AG with a backbone and a burning coal of anger at the FBI and DOJ.
For starters on day one every US attorney needs to be fired? Think she would support Trump doing that? I don’t.
Saw this, on X ... vid at link ...
As you may know, Trump nominated Pam Bondi for Attorney General.
Frankly, we have some serious concerns about her positions on the 2A.
Start with her support of Red Flag laws. She may say "due process" but her record shows she either doesn't mean it or doesn't understand it. pic.twitter.com/D9NAXGc0c4— National Association for Gun Rights (@NatlGunRights) November 22, 2024
Interesting,,,,,but not very encouraging.
Probably half of the people he’s chosen have disparaged PDJT in the past, including Vance. Why should Bondi be held to a different standard?
