At the Columbus, Ohio, gun turn-in/”buyback” event on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at least two private buyers were seen looking for deals. In the event’s coverage, this correspondent did not find any mention of the private buyers. The cameraman could not resist their compelling image. The image of private buyers destroys the “guns are bad, turn them in” message. In an event where city officials are deliberately paying “more than market value” in gift cards, it is difficult to find bargains. Once the gift cards run out, the dynamic reverses. Cash in hand is better than no gift cards. From cwcolumbus.com:
The Columbus Office of Violence Prevention says they ran out of gift cards early, and they are thanking everyone for coming out and participating.
Most programs have highlighted the guns collected with pictures of them on tables. This correspondent was unable to find images showing the guns in the coverage of the 2024 event. Numbers have been released. From myfox28columbus.com:
Authorities said 234 firearms were collected in total at the event on Saturday, including:
- 96 AR weapons
- 44 pistols
- 38 rifles
- 33 shotguns
- 23 revolvers
In 2023, the numbers were: 201 pistols, 75 shotguns, 68 rifles. In 2023, they collected 344 firearms. Of the 344, myfox28columbus.com reported 25 were “assault weapons,” which included 9 sawed-off shotguns. At least a couple of people took advantage of the “above market” prices. What’s an ‘AR’ weapon?
Good question.
Smart move.
I would guess that the government is not paying true fair market value for these weapons.
The seller gets a better deal, and the buyer gets a better deal. Everyone wins.
As to the buy back programs? Just another retard liberal idea.
Did you know we do this internationally too?
We buy arms in other countries trying to remove them from the area. All it really causes is having more arms brought in and us confronted with the decision to keep buying foreign made weapons in some African arms bazaar in perpetuity, or eventually hiding the fact that these programs all fail long term. Only short term can you have an impact.
Did I read that right, $453 each? I could scrounge two or three guns I inherited that I’d sell for $100 or less. I thought normally these buybacks would give you a $50 debit card or something.
At what point would the ATF classify you as dealer if you legitimately bought a bunch of used Saturday night specials and sold them to some police department?
The behinds (starts with an ‘a’) on this add in now or boldly (edummycate) us with their the final solution “turn in” part of their tired old meme that they are buying back that which they never had.
They really like the turn in part much better.
That pesky second amendment /s.
Pesky 2nd Amendment is true; it protects the 1st Amendment. Without the 2nd Amendment, America will be lost overnight. Without the 2nd Amendment, rinos would trample over the people’s rights is one example of its importance
Personally I have a problem with a government that pays over market price for an asset that they intend to destroy.
That is poor stewardship of the public's taxes.
If they use donated funds for this purpose, okay. I do not want tax dollars expended for such a useless endeavor.
If such government activities continue industrious individuals will be visiting gun shows looking for junk weapons to buy at a bargain just to sell to the government at a profit.
The no questions asked policy also makes it easy for a thief to dispose of a stolen weapon at a much higher price than he could on the black market.
"In 2024, a private purchaser can purchase a good-looking AR15-style rifle by purchasing a lower receiver (through a dealer) for less than $100 and an upper receiver for less than $200. This results in an “assault weapon” [for] $300. If they put the two together, which might take a minute, they could then turn them in at Columbus for $750, thereby more than doubling their money. If they wish to buy a completely new AR-15-style rifle, they have been on sale for $350. Turning the rifle in at Columbus would probably have doubled their money."
“The no questions asked policy also makes it easy for a thief to dispose of a stolen weapon at a much higher price than he could on the black market.”
A very, very good point. Fools.
“At the Columbus, Ohio, gun turn-in/”buyback” event on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at least two private buyers were seen looking for deals”
So they buy high dollar guns for around $500 and then resale them? I wonder who their customers are.
I think they are the black ones with the bumpy things toward the end and they hold lots of clips.
There was a guy printing 3D guns and sold a couple dozen if I recall correctly. Guess it depends on the buy back stipulations but most say you won’t be charged if it was involved in a crime.
Doesn’t Kamerella and Tiny Timmy Tampon pack “AR weapons” to impress the little people and shoot illegal invaders who break into Harris’ house?
That is poor stewardship of the public’s taxes.
And that is the understatement of the year.
They are using our $ to confiscate arms;
spending other people’s money.
2nd Amendment is true; it protects the 1st Amendment.
Keeps an old man relevant as well, careful who you mess with.
