The Ukrainian armed forces launched drone attacks against Russian strategic early-warning radar sites in late May, damaging at least one radar antenna. The attacks against the sites in Armavir and Orsk raised U.S. fears that Russia could misinterpret the move as an attempt to weaken the early-warning capabilities of its strategic nuclear deterrent.
The Washington Post reported on May 29 that the United States has expressed its concerns officially to Ukraine. An unnamed U.S. official cited in the report said that damage to the early-warning radars could hurt strategic stability between Russia and the United States.
The attacks occurred during a period when the White House was deliberating whether to follow NATO allies and permit Ukrainian forces to use U.S.-provided weapons systems to strike military forces inside Russia. Since then, the Biden administration has authorized Ukraine to use U.S.-provided weapons to hit back against Russian units that are attacking from across the border.

I’m sure someone will question my source. The article cites acceptable editorialized MSM sources for those who need that seal of approval.
On at least one of the nights Z was attacking these radars, the USAF was playing nuclear chicken using B-52s or B-1s with Russia in the Baltic.
I remember the next morning well. I nearly had a heart attack, no one else even looked up.

No you were not - it was heavily documented on various threads. Your back must be sore with all those pats.
“Unnamed U.S. official” = Marxist Democrat. “Incredible” to see such reverence for pinko filth on a conservative website. Conservatives use to be better than that. No more, apparently.
Zelensky has revealed himself multiple times to be an operative controlled by Soros and Western Intelligence Agencies. While one hand often seems not to know what the other hand is doing... the likelihood that this was not a coordinated is almost non-existent.
We have people supposedly on our side playing a game that could easily result in the deaths of who knows how many innocent people. Why? It is all about power and the peons don't matter.

The fact is, both nuclear powers have a “whites of their eyes” policy on nukes. Until a nuclear weapon explodes on their soil, nothing will be done against the other side, because the fate of tens of millions is on the line. This was confirmed by Soviet archives, the reasoning being that a false positive followed by Russian launches meant retaliation that would destroy hundreds of Russian cities. Before the Russians committed nuclear suicide, they needed to be sure.
So we’re giving billions and billions to Ukraine with some conditions we ask them to adhere to, and we’re supposed to believe they went rogue on this one.
My guess and just a guess is the Pentagon gave them the green light and logistics data but is denying their involvement.
Pretty standard stuff. War is deception.
As long as both sides have a more or less sane control of the launch capabilities, this is certain.
Unfortunately, the Clinton and Obama administrations have demonstrated (with the Balkans for Clinton, Libya for Obama) only a viable nuclear deterrent is adequate protection against aggression by the big players. The same can be said for Russia and China. If you have a credible nuclear deterrent, your sovereignty has viable protection.
The incentive for Ukraine to develop a nuclear deterrent is very, very high. The Clinton and Obama administration did much to undermine the idea of non-proliferation. Russia, China, and Iran are doing the final push to put non-proliferation into a death spiral.
The whole point of such radars, on both sides, is to get missiles launched before they are destroyed on the ground.
This was a critical negotiating point as regards sub launch missiles that have such a short enroute time.
So no, there is no policy of an explosion having to happen on your territory first before you retaliate. Such a policy would ensure you cannot retaliate.
Offshore US a few 10s of miles to the North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming ICBM silos is only 10 minutes, and that was before hypersonics.
Yeah, right! Read the replies on that other thread. Where were you then?
You are so aware of what this escalation means and how incredibly dangerous it is for every breathing American, tell the people reading your informed view on what this means.
I have done everything I can to inform everyone I know how incredibly dangerous our situation is.
Consider the Russian point of view. Say the Iranians attack in the next few days. Say during the 100 potentially nuclear armed US air retaliation, Z or someone hits those radars. The Russians would then be totally BLIND to the location of those 100 U.S. planes. The last radar image is of them heading strait to Russia. Putin now has five minutes to decide whether to launch the ICBMs NOW or lose them.
Please, tell me. Where is the faulty information that I’m basing my projection on? Please,I’m pleading with you to show me I’m dead wrong.
If I’ve accurately described the assets, people and time, how can you not see the deadly logic of my fears.
You know, I’ve pimped this book a hundred times on FR in the last 30 months. Not once did anyone even acknowledge the post. It’s been a 30 month slow motion, horrific auto accident for me with potential impact any minute.
“In this widely discussed and influential book, Herman Kahn probes the dynamics of escalation and demonstrates how the intensification of conflict can be depicted by means of a definite escalation ladder, ascent of which brings opponents closer to all-out war. At each rung of the ladder, before the climb proceeds, decisions must be made based on numerous choices. Some are clear and obvious, others obscure, but the options are always there.
Thermonuclear annihilation, says Kahn, is unlikely to come through accident; but nations may elect to climb the ladder to extinction. The basic material for the book was developed in briefings delivered by Kahn to military and civilian experts and revised in the light of his findings of a trip to Vietnam in the 1960s. In On Escalation he states the facts squarely. He asks the reader to face unemotionally the terrors of a world fully capable of suicide and to consider carefully the alternatives to such a path.
“In the never-never land of nuclear warfare, where nuclear incredulity is pervasive and paralyzing to the imagination even for the professional analyst, salient details of possible scenarios for the outbreak of war, and even more for war fighting, are largely unexplored or even unnoticed. For scenarios in which war is terminated, the issues and possibilities of which are almost completely unstudied, the situation is even worse. Kahn’s discussion throws light on the terrain and gives the individual a sense of the range of possibilities and complexities involved and are useful.”

The counteroffensive in 2023 was stillborn because they told the Pentagon who, where, when and how many would attack, and that leaked to the media. Since then, Ukrainians have been a cipher. They understand that for future operations to succeed, they need to keep not just Russia, but the Pentagon in the dark.
Biden’s response has been to throttle Ukrainian aid. In the latest full month, Biden sent $250m worth of Ukraine military aid. At this rate, the authorized $60b package for the fiscal year could supply Ukraine for over 20 years.
Ukraine is struggling against Biden’s attempt to make sure they lose while credibly claiming he did everything he could. It’s a close analogue to Truman’s policy with respect to China, where the aid he claimed to be sending consisted of writing off WW2 Lend Lease aid that was counted at 10 cents for every dollar for other Allies, on equipment they chose to retain, but at full value for Nationalist China. (General Wedemeyer’s report has generally been ignored by Truman’s fans, but it’s an accurate depiction of the accounting shenanigans that can make official numbers show a much rosier picture of actual aid than was actually delivered).

Satellite imagery confirms a Russian strategic early warning radar site in the southwestern end of the country was substantially damaged in a reported Ukrainian drone attack earlier this week. This looks to be a first-of-its-kind attack on a site linked to Russia's general strategic defense. As such, it points to a new and worrisome dimension to the conflict, especially when it comes to the potential use of nuclear weapons.
A satellite image taken on May 23 that The War Zone obtained from Planet Labs of the Armavir Radar Station in Russia's southwestern Krasnodar Krai shows significant debris around one of the site's two Voronezh-DM radar buildings. These are ultra-high-frequency (UHF) over-the-horizon (OTH) radars that are part of Russia's nuclear ballistic missile early warning system.

This stupid war must end now.
Cut off the funds and lets end this insane game of chicken.
Not even close! Kubrick included an adult, (a very funny adult) in the room, President Merkin Muffley. In our current situation, would President Muffley walk us back from Armageddon? Is Heels or the dementia patient capable of that?
Honest to God, I’d take Muffley’s War Room over whoever’s that is running this today.
We left uproarious comedy in the rear view mirror a while ago.
Thanks Zhang Fei.

What it is, however, is a deterrent against enemy nuclear attack. The problem is that to remain credible, with insurance against an enemy first strike, you need the full triad - ICBMs, air-dropped bombs and SLBMs. That’s many billions, at minimum. Including capital costs, the UK probably spends around $10b a year out of a total budget of $50b. Ukraine’s entire prewar 2021 military budget was $6b.

In WW2, Japanese soldiers, from general on down, were told to sacrifice their lives, if necessary. But when push came to shove, and physical extinction seemed on the menu, the men at the top drew back, even though many publicly proclaimed that surrender would result in Japan being butchered to the last.
If men that fanatical and convinced of a better future in the hereafter surrendered, it’s a good bet that no leader of a small nuclear power is going to consign his people to erasure from the gene pool over an invasion. They will fight without using nukes the way Hitler fought without using chemical weapons.
