As Minnesota Governor Tim Walz vies for the U.S. vice presidency, new details are surfacing about his teaching career, including the impact he made as faculty advisor for a high school Gay-Straight Alliance club. However, sources say the Walz family were LGBTQ+ community boosters even before then, as especially evidenced by one extracurricular Indigo Girls concert where the Walzes taught in Nebraska.
,,, Jacob Reitan — a former student of both Walz and his wife Gwen Walz (nee Whipple), both teachers at Mankato West High School in the 1990s — described feeling stunned when Ms. Walz announced her husband would be leading the GSA. Reitan said he had been subjected to homophobic abuse by other students, but confiding in Ms. Walz that he was gay gave him enough confidence to also come out to his parents, and eventually the school. After coming out, and with Mr. Walz in charge of the GSA, the bullying generally came to a halt, he said.
“It was important to have a person who was so well-liked on campus, a football coach who had served in the military,” Reitan told the Times. “Having Tim Walz as the adviser of the Gay-Straight Alliance made me feel safe coming to school.”
While Walz certainly deserves credit for stepping up, it seems to have been Gwen Walz who understood the raw importance of LGBTQ+ allyship in the mid-90s. Before the Walzes became involved with the GSA, Reitan recalled, Ms. Walz told him she had offered support to another gay student while teaching in Nebraska at the school where she and her husband met. A spokesperson for Ms. Walz confirmed to the Times that the couple chaperoned the anonymous student at an Indigo Girls concert — truly, one of the decade’s strongest bastions of queer community and camaraderie.

I think a question no one seems to be asking, would be, does the school district have policies against fraternization with students after hours?
I’ve heard some school districts do have such policies.
Maybe their school district does not.
There are some legitimate questions to be asked about this.
Of course it is possible to not have sex with teenage kids when you are a teacher.
However—if you find opportunity after opportunity to get them away from their parents it is reasonable to ask why....especially if it is happening with a lot of kids over many years....
It is the Walz body language that gives him away—pay attention to how he reacts to men vs women—and especially young men.
As the real Tim Walz is being exposed on ‘This is Your Life’, I keep wondering why the folks in Minnesota have not already been talking about his history.

Teachers do NOT take students to concerts. That is NOT “socializing;” that is a firing offense. Doesn’t matter one iota whether it’s a gay or straight student. Fraternizing with students like that outside the school is off limits.
Lots of teachers here attest to that.

Some very talented and caring teachers are very good at sharing their avid interests that they are passionate about with students and often sponsor school clubs for extra curricular activities with like minded individuals.
Things like the Future Farmers of America club
The Competitive Shooting Club
The Archery Club.
The Debate Club.
The Scuba Diving Club
The Ski Club
The Future Business Leaders of America Club.
The Flying Club
The Travel Club.
The Glee Club.
The Hiking Club.
Who are we to judge that starting in the 1990s Walz and his wife have an avid interest in Gay-Straight Alliance club and are passionate enough about the subject matter to sponsor the club and mentor students with gay themed extra curricular activities. Perfectly normal.
So was this a school sponsored event?
Educators should not be taking students (regardless of their sexual orientation )to social events. The exception would be school sponsored events.

This approach will not swing votes, I think the uneasy leaning-Democrat voters would be attracted only by economic or security issues. Getting high fives from already convinced Trump voters is good for early morale but otherwise meaningless white noise. Just saying we’re going to need more substantive issues than what Walz did thirty years ago.

Indigo Girls were kind of classy IMO. Saw them on a late night talk show. They were asked if REM was more famous because of sexism. They gave REM full credit, didn’t whine, said it was because REM were damned good.
More precisely put, he was a volunteer assistant coach.
My eldest son was in the GSA back in high school. Straight as an arrow. (Now married to a lovely young lady. Sadly, they lost their first child).
Why?
He is Christian. He knew the easiest way to witness to them was to know who they were as people and have them see him as a friend. Moreover, he has a shepherd’s spirit. He didn’t want to see them bullied.
He was the only straight in the entire group.

It may be important to some voters—it may not.
