The Radical Cultural Shift Behind America’s Declining Birth Rate
The Ringer ^ | Jun 21, 2024, 8:58am EDT | By Derek Thompson

Posted on 06/22/2024 10:59:39 PM PDT by thecodont

We’ve done several podcasts on America’s declining fertility rate, and why South Korea has the lowest birthrate in the world. But we’ve never done an episode on the subject quite like this one.

Today we go deep on the psychology of having children and not having children and the cultural revolution behind the decline in birthrates in America and the rest of the world. The way we think about dating, marriage, kids, and family is changing radically in a very short period of time. And we are just beginning to reckon with the causes and consequences of that shift. In the new book What Are Children For, Anastasia Berg and Rachel Wiseman say a new “parenthood ambivalence” is sweeping the world. In today’s show, they persuade Derek that this issue is about more than the economic trends he tends to focus on when he discusses this issue.

If you have questions, observations, or ideas for future episodes, email us at PlainEnglish@Spotify.com.

In the following excerpt, Derek talks to Anastasia Berg and Rachel Wiseman about their book and about their approach to explaining declining birth rates.

Life is so expensive and young people are really up against it. Don’t tell me it was always like this, it wasn’t.

The US birth rate today is about 1/3 of what it was in 1960.

The pill, taxes, abortion, and anti-family / anti-religion propaganda have all decimated our country.

And we have the left to thank for that. It’s a win as far as they’re concerned.

You make the common female mistake, of thinking that ALL men, are like the 10%-20% of the playas whom most women lust for and fornicate with.

Most men are literally invisible to women, except insofar as they consider them a nuisance just for existing.

Well said, Gene. But is that right, or rite, of independence?

I have one question who, will care for them when they are old?

No kids, there will be NOBODY!

On another site, discussing mass immigration, one poster spoke of their far-left New York City liberal relatives who are totally committed to mass immigration, on just such reasoning:

"Who will take care of us when we're old?"

Vox Day blames the Boomers for destroying the single greatest human society ever seen, in a single generation, and speaks of "the day of the pillow."

Women are the ones who spread their legs.

There is such a word as no, or even breaking up with him.

But no, women can't do that, because he's hawt.

Women used to safeguard each other's chastity.

But now it has become a "Strong, Empowered" social-media driven race to the bottom. "Hawk-Tuah"

Society could be doing a much better job of helping serious young people vet quality marriage partners.

A function that was once performed by extended family.

Young Orthodox Jews are having large families. If the trend continues they will overtake the secular and “reform” Jewish population.

the only reason men start having trouble performing is because the women in their lives turn into massive hogs.

I think that the societal pressure to avoid having children is a symptom, not a root cause.

The mouse utopia experiments conducted by John Calhoun of the NIMH in the 1950s and 1960s give an insight into the root causes. There is a lot written about these experiments.

John Calhoun set up mouse (or rat) habitats that provided everything the animals needed to survive. At first, the mice (rats) thrived. But as their population grew, they began to exhibit aberrant behaviors. Long before their habitats had reached the limit of how many animals they could support, the populations started to decline and eventually died out. Female mice lost interest in having pups. If they got pregnant, they would either absorb the fetuses (a mouse form of abortion that occurs when the mouse is stressed) or neglect the pups. Male mice became obsessed with their appearance and spent all their time grooming, but did not socialize with other mice. There were other issues, as well.

There are plenty of analogies between what happened in the mouse utopia experiments and what is happening now with the societal obsession with “transgenderism” and anything LBGTQFLEJSY and the fact that many young women are highly concerned with being able to kill their babies, but reject raising babies.

The problem with the mice is that the colonies grew too large, making it impossible for every mouse to know every other mouse in the colony. This put the mice in constant contact with strangers, which was stressful for them. The more strangers and fewer familiar faces each mouse encountered, the more social disfunction occurred. And, in the end, this was fatal for the colony.

Look at human society, especially in cities. How many strangers does a city dweller encounter daily, vs. how many familiar people? All of these anti-reproduction movements seem centered in cities. Isn’t that an indication that humans are subject to the social stresses that wiped out the mice (or rats)?

the general rule that I’ve heard is that women control whether or not sex happens and men control whether or not a relationship happens.

Everybody’s missing the point that government policies are anti-family while rewarding 3rd world people to come here and have large families.

Excellent point. This is a good study to reference and is good common sense as well. How can you know and vet someone in some faceless metropolis?

Immoral people depend on the faceless anonymity a big city provides. There is plenty of social churn and new people to meet, always with newly-invented lives.

Laying all the responsibility at women’s feet is lazy and blame shifting.

No it's not. Responsibility comes with power, and women have the huge majority of the power in getting laid. Sure there may be moral men and women as individuals, but as a whole it depends on women to give it up, not men to give it out.

If a guy wants to get laid, he goes to a bar, buys several women a drink, and hopes one of them will at least talk to him.

If a chick wants to get laid, she goes to a bar, gets a couple drinks for free, then picks one of those guys to have sex with.

It’s still blame shifting responsibility.

Vox Day blames the Boomers for destroying the single greatest human society ever seen, in a single generation, and speaks of "the day of the pillow."

Day of the Pillow is a slang term for a hypothetical mass killing event against Baby Boomers carried out through the means of them being smothered with pillows in nursing homes. Coined on 4chan in 2017, the term has been used as a way of expressing a strong dislike for and wishing harm onto members of the Baby Boomer generation. The phrase references the "Day of the Rope," a white supremacist concept for a revolution. - found on the Internet
