Macron thought he could stampede the center-right and center left into supporting him. Instead, both centers moved towards their respective extremes leaving Macron hanging in mid-air. There are now calls for him to resign if the center loses the parliamentary elections badly, which is expected.
The about face on Ukraine by the RN partly reflects political reality to attract the center but also the fact that the French see the Ukraine war as an opportunity to promote French leadership in the EU, displace the US to some extent, and garner significant arms sales.
