I’ve been saying for decades that property taxes ARE unconstitutional——this is why. Why should a tax bill be applied to property you already own? Abolish property taxes....

The real problem is property tax. Property tax denies the right of ownership and instead turns ostensible homeowners into tenants of the state.

It is time to outlaw property taxes. Find another way to fund government or else just cut spending down to what is necessary.

Either way, I don’t own it if I have to pay rent to the king every year.

Why didn’t she pay it? Why didn’t she call and make arrangements? I know many here in Florida that pay their property taxes quarterly so they don’t have a bill once a year they have to come up with. I’m sure some even accept monthly payments. It must be true that most Americans don’t even have six hundred dollars in a savings account. There were many avenues she could have taken. Everybody o earth knows that if you don’t pay property taxes, you lose your home.

Stories like this expose the recklessness of heeding the advice of financial people like Dave Ramsey who advise their followers to pay off their mortgages aggressively.

No, that’s foolish. You’re better off carrying the biggest mortgage you can afford, use your extra income wisely, and let the government deal with the bank when this kind of sh!t happens.

I agree, confiscatory property taxation keeps people on the hook for life. I think if you pay 12 years of school taxes you should get to stop paying. Those are the highest in my town.

This is unconscionable theft and should be struck down.

Property taxes existed in North America before the U.S. existed. In fact, in the early years of our history they were the only taxes most Americans paid.

But, under their current laws, 10 states and the District of Columbia have no means of returning the excess proceeds of a home sale; what Mountain States Legal Foundation lawyers representing Ms. Searle call “home equity theft.” The states include Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and South Dakota.

Most of those states are no surprise.

First off, I don’t care-—but thanks for the reply.
Secondly, now it’s a scam. I pay $11,000 in property taxes in Eastern part of PA. And that’s considered about average.
This should NOT be a condition of property ownership-—abolish it and pay school taxes from EIT.

The reason it’s unconstitutional is it’s attached to your private property and in tyrannical fashion, they could raises taxes (10X or more) to the point that you can no longer afford your home or sell it-—and voila, property confiscated.

That won’t work.

If the government takes your property that is mortgaged, you still owe the bank. Your name is on the mortgage papers, not the government’s.

Governments confiscate cars all the time from drug users that are still being paid for. The drug user still owes the lender for the car even though they no longer own it...........................

the cost of that strategy is paid in interest to the banks — just to add a salient point.

That is just legalese BS.

All they have to do is write a check for the excess, just like a tax refund.............

I think the point is that you can’t lose equity you haven’t accrued by aggressively paying the mortgage. Of course they’d do an asset search and find it your bank and take that too. But presumably they don’t know about it if it’s under your mattress...unless they audit you.
