I own a .54 caliber blackpowder, muzzle loading, flintlock rifle which my arthritic hands can load and fire at the rate of about three rounds per minute. I wonder if that would be considered an “assault rifle”? I guess maybe it would have been in 1770.

Three rounds a minute is pretty good. IIRC that is the rate of fire a well trained soldier should be able to do during the horse and musket error.
