"Always confused me too. We won the war."
Our original strength was that we were one culture (now lost). Our mistake was we became a colonial power and opened our door to the "wretched refuge"; and it's been down hill ever since.

Americans also wanted British Columbia.

But Polk wanted Texas, Mexico and Cuba. Because of the s-word?

We could have had Newfoundland, but Harry Truman wanted to appease Canada and Britain and didn't press the issue.

I approve with the following modification:
Take everything up to the St. Lawrence Seaway and give it to Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. While they will probably
screw it up anyway, at least that border will make some sense.

Why stop there? Panama is a nice pinch point
and a relatively easy border to defend by land.
Also, there’s that Canal thing going on down there.
It would be nice to have that back too.

It might have made things more difficult because we would be a multilingual country.

Bunch of places all spoke Spanish until we took over. Florida, New Mexico, Arizona, California. Louisiana spoke french as well as Spanish.

By now they would all be chattering away in English.

Much of the Southwest spoke their native languages. They didn’t get along at all with the Spaniards/Mexicans.

I kind of doubt your premise. Things like individual liberties, rule of law, representative democracy have not aged well in states whose origin is the Iberian peninsula. My gut feeling is that this stems from the al Andalus and the caliph pattern of govt. Even states that experienced American rule like the P. I. have had little success in creating a lasting govt and society with our liberties.

Do I detect a bit of a disdain of folks from the southern side of Europe? I seem to remember that they successfully kicked out the Moslem invaders five centuries ago..

I have lived in neighborhoods with majorities of "Chicanos" and other than a propensity for spray-painting any vertical surface they can find, they has fully absorbed American ethos and share our devotion to freedom.

I can't speak for the beliefs of our more newly-arrived and massive influx of Latinos but when people are immersed in our system and the old systems are eventually forgotten, they make dandy citizens.

Served alongside lots of them in combat and they were great.

As one whose family hails from Calabria geography has nothing to do with my opinions. As for the Reconquista you alluded to...it is not inconsistent to recognize the expulsion of the Moors and to accept that the victor’s in that struggle adopted some of the societal and political mores of those who ruled them for 7 centuries. And that the tradition of the Caudillo closely follows the idea of Caliph even though the name tracks from Roman Latin, not Arabic.
