If you heard a commentator state that the reason why Special Counsel Jack Smith appears to be so desperate for his J6 trial of Donald Trump to proceed as speedily as possible on March 4, 2024 is because he want to obtain a conviction of Trump before the election for purely political reasons, it would be safe to assume that this analysis was given on NewsMax or perhaps OANN.
However, what is shocking is the commentator in this case was CNN's legal analyst, Elie Honig, on Saturday's Smerconish. CNN has treated him as Eliot Ness who buys lunch at Subway like an everyday hero.

The “right to a speedy trial” is more often observed in the breach than the fulfillment. Hastily prepared briefs and indictments almost always assure that some very important facts or evidence are overlooked or swept under the rug. To the best of my knowledge, the Team Trump has a legally protected right to discovery of ALL the collection of specifics and supporting evidence that Jack Smith (sounds like a made-up name, is that perhaps an alias?) claims to have assembled. Delay until discovery is completed is entirely appropriate.
It’s probably too much to hope for the SC to deliver an instant death blow to Smith and the DOJ, but surely they see them for what they are. But, we can still hope they end these political prosecutions.
Roberts, though, and the court in general try to stay out of politics so many expect they’ll delay for a while before returning the case to its proper sequencing via lower courts, which ruins Smith’s timelines.
This wished-for death blow, however, would expose the illegitimacy of the other cases against Trump.
DjT’s legal team has appeals of all sorts lined up and ready to go for all the various indictments such that conviction and jail before Nov. on any of them is a pipe dream. By ‘25, or ‘26 maybe, at which time the SC can rule on the cases of a popular President just down Pennsylvania ave. sitting in the WH.
