Living in the USA vs Europe

This week at work a team member was talking about how her 23 year old son who is done with college is itching to move to Germany because he is tired of the USA and what is going on here.

Two other co-workers chimed in saying how everything is wonderful in Germany and that so much is "free" and one the lady has a friend who moved to Germany from the USA and she loves it because of once again all the "free" they get.

I wanted to explode and tell them nowhere is like the USA and that they should be thankful. Europe is not all its cracked up to be but they they want the USA to became Europe for all the "free" they will get.

My youngest Daughter says she is moving to Italy in a year. I don’t think she is thinking this through.

Many years ago, I knew a girl in college who had a sister who seemed unhappy and kept on wasn't doing too well. She went to remote Italy due to a boyfriend, and wound up living in a rural area that wasn't very wealthy, working as a dressmaker. It worked for her. Some New Yorkers don't understand why everyone doesn't see nyc as superior. Some Texans feel similarly about Texas. Different strokes for different folks.

The important thing is that she is free to leave. You cannot say the same about North Korea.

The literally millions of Muslims - overwhelmingly military age males - Germany has taken in over the last few years have hugely negatively impacted the country. Crime is way up. They’re living on the public dole and making the country poorer. They don’t hesitate to harass women or worse. Did I mention they’re Jew haters? Don’t you dare think about complaining about any of this either. That would be “racist”. You’re liable to be arrested for noticing any of this. Must not criticize the authorities.

Don’t forget the weird hours shops are open or closed, or the holidays that seem to happen 2-3 times a week.

My Cuz Bill, Army vet in Germany, married a German woman in the 80s. To Bill’s advantage he had a very German Surname - Halbeisen.

They have 3 children, lived in Germany for several years, visited the US several times, entire family was multi-lingual.
The southern duchies are very conservative, Bill works as a door installer/hanger. He installs, repairs and replaces doors of all types from kitchen cabinet doors to rolling warehouse doors.
Bill and family did move to USA in late 90s long enough for his wife and children to earn their US citizenship, they all have US Passports per my uncle. And they have a exit plans in place should SHTF. Bill said at the last reunion, he’d return to USA but he loves the fishing in Germany - catch and release. It’s expensive and the annual tests are grueling but the best fishing ever.

What’s very funny is Bill is the only one in the family who’s voice has that German grunt-al tone.

"We’re the land of opportunity, not the land of gibsmedat"

Or were. The no questions asked eligibility for free government benefits during the pandemic likely shifted public philosophy from work and responsibility to one of government dependence. We are now a center left country.

Absolutely nothing is more expensive than “free” stuff from the government.

I refuse to live anywhere that must be disarmed. Europe across the 20th century has shown the risk. 100 million dead?

I thoroughly enjoyed my German tours; I was stationed in Ansbach for a year after Vietnam and then later on did 3 years in Bamberg and 1 1/2 years in Butzbach.

I got to be conversationally fluent in German and even though most young Germans spoke English, they were happy to hear an American speak their language.

Great website called Schnitzel Republic. Run by a GI that was stationed in Germany and then married a German gal and stayed. Gives great commentary on current affairs in Krautland. Not all it’s cracked up to be.

I've told my daughter it was time to put me away when I wax too eloquently about the Summer of 79. Fortunately, she doesn't Freep, so I'm safe...lol.

I was the XO of a support detachment at Todendorf, a German anti-aircraft range, used by American Vulcan units in February and July-August. I was often acting CO when my boss was back at home station dealing with marital problems. I had great NCOs working with me, things ran better when he was gone...think CPT Sobel of Band of Brothers.

I never had a disciplinary problem, and it wasn't due to my leadership. There was a tourist town 5 miles off base (Lutjenburg) that came to life during the summer. I have never encountered a place with a greater concentration of newly divorced women. We were the only Americans for 200 miles, and these women fell in love with my soldiers.

I made so many friends that summer, I'd head back there on long weekends to enjoy their company, during my last two years in Germany. It was a very successful summer, both professionally and personally.

Would love to go back, but it's just not in the cards. No regrets there.

I lived there for a few years and left when Merkel cancelled my residency to make room for her imported violent pets from Africa and the Middle East. I did enjoy certain parts. I especially liked living down in Bavaria. Being older and conservative there were many arguments with oh so smarty-pants Germans about how great it is with free stuff. Sure. But a 70% tax rate doesn’t sound free to me. Before the invaders hospitals were fine. Now. I imagine they are filled with imported Muslims. But even if medical care is “free” how much time do they plan to stay in the hospital? I have oy.been to a hospital once in near 60 years.

The arrogant America hater will find a welcoming crowd of fellow America haters. They will smugly make fun of Americans for not travelling, paying for health care out of pocket, how wonderful the DB train system is, and all the usual Marxist claptrap. However, reality will slap them in the face when they are assaulted by a “German resident of immigrant back ground” and they get their first electricity bill.

Speaking of a freedom (not really since we need a license in most states) we have here that is taken for granted...

I am an avid fisherman. I figured there would be great fishing when I lived in Germany since nearly every place I was living had rivers and canals. Especially near Berlin. Where I live now I can walk in to the sporting good shop and pay my yearly fishing license fee. Any foreigner can get a week long license for a few bucks. In Germany. Forget it. It was insanely expensive and complicated.

I read his daily essays every week or so. He occasionally makes me scratch my noggin, but he does write a pretty good column/essay/blog.

I have a nephew who has lived in Germany since he was 7 years old, he's now 50. He is married to a German lady and they own a restaurant and hotel, which she inherited from her grandfather.

Sure things are "free" but taxes run about 70%. Bureaucratic oversight is insane (paperwork and reports for their business). The mindset of the average German is quite liberal and the older Germans still suffer from "German guilt" which basically paralyzes their thinking process, IMO.

It used to be (I assume it is still the same) the government (i.e. taxpayers) would pay for your college but they decided if you qualified. No yardsales/flea markets on Sundays, well, just because they say so. When there are rules that make no sense the average German just says "that is the rule, we don't question it".

Then there is the crime from the immigrants (good website, updated daily, if you want to stay up with crime in EU:
https://medforth.blog/

At the rate we are going in America with open borders this may be a view of things to come.

They actually believe they have free speech....but then go on to defend why ‘some’ speech should be punished, ‘hate speech’ and all. If you tell them that should be ok, you should be able to say almost anything, the most outrageous of offensive things, outside of a call to violence or causing panic that will lead to injury.

They’ll look at you funny. Like, “no, that shouldn’t be allowed”. Then tell them they don’t actually believe in free speech then, that the State has discretion to control their speech. You can see the gears turn.

As someone who was brought up in the UK, it’s the same, we weren’t taught about this stuff.

Read the Declaration of Independence.

Governments are removed when they do not affect your safety and your happiness.

Are you safe? Are you happy?

My sister in law and other relatives by marriage actually have lived there most of their lives and they would beg to differ about all this article has to say. Europe is overrun with Muslims and other third world flavors who are much more adept at sucking up all that “free” the people exampled in this article covet.

As someone who was brought up in the UK, it’s the same, we weren’t taught about this stuff.

The whole supposed "hate speech" thing.....if its OK to ban certain speech on the grounds that its "hate speech", how do you stop politicians from abusing that power? How do you prevent them from labelling any criticism of them and their policies as "hate speech" and thus censoring it and/or jailing their critics?

They never have an answer for that. And I can tell you having lived in Germany twice, that YES! They do EXACTLY THAT. The establishment there gets hysterical and screeches that anybody who disagrees with them is....scare quotes "far right" and if that still doesn't get the public to go along they get even more shrill and shriek "they will drag us all back to the trenches!!!" no matter how utterly absurd that is.

Not want to surrender your national sovereignty to the EU? FAR RIGHT!

Think foreigners who come to your country should adapt to your culture and obey your laws? NAZI!

Question the wisdom of importing millions of military age males from a completely alien not to mention hostile culture who have nothing but contempt for your culture and who refuse to integrate? RACIST! etc etc
