China now has EMP weapons on their ICBMs and on ships, submarines, and probably on some satellites. Their EMP missiles need only to be detonated above our aircraft carriers in the Pacific to render their radars, radios, and navigation systems useless – as well as those of every aircraft they carry. Because of the range of an EMP pulse, they don’t need direct hits. A miss by a mile will do.

THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) missile systems are designed to take those out before detonation or ground delivery. 700 missiles have been delivered and the system has gone 16/16 successful intercepts in testing. U.S. also continues on-again off-again development of boost-phase ICBM missile defense.

China and Russia are not our EMP concerns. Yes, if we ever had a nuclear exchange with either, we would be just as devastated by EMP as from blast and radiation. So would they, hence deterrence. Hezbollah or Iran or the NORKS using a few nukes launched from freighters in the Gulf of Mexico or off the East Coast could destroy American society and starve millions of us to death. If you want to scare the bejeebers out of yourself, listen to this.

The trick is to stay far enough away so that such weapons don’t render the user impotent as well when it comes to tactical battlefield use.

As for continental electronic “buster” use the issue is that weapons that might be powerful enough to knock out the US will knock out Mexico and Canada as well which would cause more issues for the attacking country than not. Also Alaska might not be affected and forward bases would not be affected and our already hardened military facilities would not be affected. Subs would not be affected.

No one really knows for certain how to contain the effects of a continent wide emp to just that continent. Certainly we have short area range data using weapons with conventional explosives. We know what lightning can do.

A continent wide emp attempt is a hail Mary sort of thing. The effects would certainly not be as blanketing as the user country might hope and the vagaries of topology and geology and even man made tower structures will minimize the effects in many areas. It would also have to be a night shot as the magnetic fields are thicker on the night side and thinned out on the day side due to solar wind. The Earth’s curvature also would affect the blast timing and the blast altitudes.

I think we’ll see drone type emps taking out smaller targets perpetrated by sleeper cells in co-ordinated simultaneous terror attacks before any large scale emp’s are attempted.

Let's hope they don't put them on their balloons because we let them fly right over us now

They are hardened against EMP as well as our aircraft.

Why do you think the push to Fiber Optics occured and that most cities put there power underground?

True, an EMP would do a lot of damage, but with Fiber Optics and power underground too much would survive and an replying in kind would not be fun for the perps.

An EMP set off 300 miles over Kansas would knock power out to most of the country.
