In 2010, Cleveland was dubbed the most miserable city in the U.S. by Forbes. More than ten years later, its reputation hasn’t changed at all. Commonly known as “the mistake by the lake” about its proximity to Lake Erie, Cleveland isn’t a place anyone wants to live.

If you can forgo living within a 10-minute walk from a park, Jacksonville has a LOT of great areas to live, not just the downtown area. It’s the largest city, in sq miles, in the lower 48. The four cities in the U.S. that are larger than Jacksonville are all in Alaska. It’s very easy to travel around J’ville. It’s the junction for I-10 and I-95, with I-295 to get you around the city.

Only a few listings mentioned illegal alien population. And I would expect that a number of the cities also have accepted Section 8 housing, which would make the town a magnet for additional poverty statistics. It certainly has affected the town I live in now.

Beyond that, the most common comment seemed to be about the manufacturing that moved out or closed down. 50-70 years ago, manufacturing drove the US economy, but today our biggest product seems to be entertainment, sports or government spending. I heard on this morning's news that some basketball player just signed a 3-year contract for $186 Million. Maybe he can buy a few of these towns and fix them up.

Did every city in New Jersey make this list?

Pretty much any place with a fire hydrant.

Compton is one of the three cities on the list I’ve either lived in or next to.

Fun fact about Compton, CA: It was once heavily (75%) Black when it had horrific crime. Blacks have been fleeing out since the 1980s, and now it’s over 2/3rds Hispanic.

And yet still no one picks up the literal piles of trash on the streets.

Reno?? That is pure B.S. Except for the homeless bums who cause all the property crime, Reno is a great city. Neighborhoods are beautiful. I live in a planned community called Somerset which is just incredible. I can’t decide what season looks the most beautiful here. Right now I think it is Fall😄. Lots of great casinos, restaurants and entertainment. Hot August Nights and other events. Many ski resorts nearby. Lake Tahoe. It really is the Biggest Little City. You can get from one end of the city to the other in just minutes.

Cleveland does have a high poverty population, and high violent crime on a per capita basis. But that hasn’t stopped a healthy in-migration of residents, as older office buildings are repurposed to upscale apartments and condos. As for the working poor, the cost of living is relatively low compared to larger cities, so there’s that. Cleveland has shrunk to under 400,000 population, as manufacturing jobs have left town; which also means less crowding and attractive open spaces, recreational venues, and a first rate cultural district at University Circle. It isn’t Shangri-La but it has long since outgrown the “mistake-on-the-Lake” meme.

“ North Miami Beach, Florida

The problems in North Miami Beach largely stem from the city’s corrupt leadership. Two former mayors are currently facing criminal charges for their spending decisions while in office.”

LOL

And then there is this, a North Miami Resident.
