This person on TikTok posted a video documenting their unplugged appliances before taking a trip and honestly, it's kind of ingenious.
Among all the intrusive thoughts I deal with on a regular basis, one of them involves trying to remember whether or not I did the most important things I should do before leaving the house. Namely, I ask myself if I locked the door, turned the stove off, or performed any other security tasks before stepping out. And even if I check all of those things off and officially leave, alarms will start going off in asking me if I really did do everything I should have before I left.
If I think even for a second that maybe I imagined doing all those things and didn't actually do them, it'll stick in the back of my mind and bother me for the entire trip until I return home. For all intents and purposes, it's a pretty irrational fear, but something I deal with on a daily basis.
To that end, this person on TikTok has an interesting solution. They posted a video documenting all of their unplugged appliances before taking a trip. It may look obsessive, but it's honestly clever!

I film myself taking a bath. That way I can check later to see if I washed everywhere.
I get 15 feet from the car đ and wonder if I locked the door. Gotta get a new battery for the remote.
It never fails, every time we leave, my wife tells me to turn around, because she thinks she left the flat iron plugged in.
And every single time it turns out she didn’t.
“The power of smartphones is awesome,...”
Every time someone asks me what time it is, I feel like telling them maybe they should check the supercomputer in their pocket because I’m pretty sure it has a clock.
Most of the time I just say I don’t know and laugh internally about the fact that I have an almost identical device in my pocket am not going to do their ‘research’ for them.[

I use a simple travel checklist on my phone. Is that “ingenious”?
Great idea about photographing your luggage!
I keep meaning to do a video walk-through of our entire house. Those are very valuable for insurance claims is your house burns down. It’s been on my to-do list for years.

But .... that’s a good sign... right? lol
We also notified the police we would be away. They did drive bys every day. Of course that's the old days.
Gee... do they even make pens and paper anymore? I thought they were outlawed, to save the trees.
Checklist. Pilots use them for a reason.
It isnât a bad idea to close or turn off the water main valve. Gone for more than a day. One potential problem while away - clothes washer inlet hoses are under constant water pressure. If they split, then it could lead to very expensive water damage.
I use my cellphone to scan documents and upload to my Dropbox.
Ha!
Ha!
Ha!
Some of us old codgers still have a stash of pens and paper. I even have some actual wooden pencils, too, right next to the rotary telephone.
” look at the encoded geolocation data”
I use an app to remove all EXIF data from any pic I post on the net. Even if I download a pic and do something with it, my last step is to strip out all EXIF.
I wonder how many people even realize that information is stored on their pictures?
After we had a microwave melt down after a lightning strike at our house in NM, we would unplug all our appliances except the stove and fridges when we went away.
That doesn't work for people with OCD. Which is what that site is dedicated to, I believe.
What I do, which works really well, is burn my house down before I go.
You’re right. It does read like they spilled the beans about being away from home for awhile. I had it in my head they posted it as a “here’s what I did” (after the trip).
