America's 20th President, Republican James A Garfield, was assassinated in Elberon, New Jersey, at the age of 49, on September 19, in 1861. This was only six and a half months after his inauguration.
He spoke powerful words for freedom:
"The truth will set you free, but first it will make you miserable."
"Next in importance to freedom and justice is popular education, without which neither freedom nor justice can be permanently maintained."
This libertarianism is at the heart of America's soul.

“1861”
Lol.
1861. I caught that, too. Either that website has a spectacularly bad editor or every other article in the world about Garfield is wrong.

He also was not killed in Elberon NJ. He died there, but was shot in DC, I believe.
Yes a train station in DC. He went to Elberon NJ to die by the sea. His incompetent doctors were more responsible for his slow painful death than the assassin.
I just read Destiny of the Republic about his murder. Very interesting read.
Yup—the article is very weak in other respects.
It failed to name the assassin or the reason for the assassination—which undermine the main narrative.
The assassin was someone who wanted a federal job under the spoils system currently in place—hardly a libertarian....
;-)
As for Garfield—he was a party hack who talked a good game.
(We have a lot of those these days as well.)
Oh my goodness . . .
He was shot on July 2, 1881 while walking arm-in-arm with James G. Blaine to a train station in Washington DC. He was taking a train to (I believe) his college class reunion in Massachusetts.
He lay in the White House until September 6 when he was moved to Elberon NJ. He died there thirteen days later, more than two months after being shot.
Lincoln became president in 1861. He was 16th president. Garfield was 20th president 20 years later.
See! lincoln was never president because he STOLE the election, impersonating Garfield.
I had no idea that John Garfield had been president!?馃馃榿
Maybe a different James Garfield.
Elberon is a nice little upscale town on The Jersey Shore.
