America's 20th President, Republican James A Garfield, was assassinated in Elberon, New Jersey, at the age of 49, on September 19, in 1861. This was only six and a half months after his inauguration.Oh my goodness . . .
He was shot on July 2, 1881 while walking arm-in-arm with James G. Blaine to a train station in Washington DC. He was taking a train to (I believe) his college class reunion in Massachusetts.
He lay in the White House until September 6 when he was moved to Elberon NJ. He died there thirteen days later, more than two months after being shot.

Johnny Cash's song has more facts than this article.
Mr. Garfield

Lincoln became president in 1861. He was 16th president. Garfield was 20th president 20 years later.
