Hit the portal refers to the college sports “transfer portal”, which players sign up for, to indicate a desire to transfer to another school. It’s a jargon term meaning a player intends to transfer to another school.
This man has single-handedly put Colorado back on the CFB map, and with today's NIL deals for college kids, he will get a top recruiting class wherever he goes. At some point he will go to the NFL.
I worked for Intel in the ‘70s. Andy Grove’s philosophy was that effort doesn’t count. Results count.
Dion gets that.
I don't think it's that black and white (pun intended). Sanders will certainly affect recruitment and transfer activity for years to come... but that's because he's different and takes no crap. Other (white) coaches who consistently recruit well in no-BS programs (like Saban and anyone who is a branch on his coaching tree- Smart, Sark, etc.) will continue to recruit at a high level (inclusive of black people) because of their programs. Plenty of white kids stayed (at CU) as well.
I don't care for his personal style, but if you listen to his speeches and the things he says to these kids, it's all about them, and he's pretty outspoken about not worrying about criticism directed at him.
So far, it's paying off - they're now ranked, and they're winning games that most experts thought they had no shot of winning, with a QB that many argued has no business playing FBS football. I wasn't sure that he would beat TCU, but he did... and a lot of the betting money was on an outright win, so clearly there are a lot of folks who believed him. Nebraska wasn't a tough opponent, and even with the cheap shot on Travis Hunter, they still beat CSU. He's earned the right to trash talk for a little while - if they can beat Oregon, or even come close, he would have already converted a number of critics into believers (that his way can and will work).
“...“Git up... you ain’t hurt.”...”
Makes me recall my Dad, a Dad whom we dearly loved and respected. He died many years ago. Bit I remember him saying to his sons such things as:
“Stop that damn crying or I’ll give you a reason to cry!”
“Disobey your mother one more time and you’ll be eating off the mantle for a week.” (because of sore butt)
He loved Mom and the his kids fiercely and yet was a tough disciplinarian. I hope I followed his example.
*“I’m waiting for him to come out of the closet as a republican. “
*************
Would today’s timid Republican Party embrace a tough talking messenger like Deion? I kind of doubt it. That would unnerve most of the party members who are uncomfortable with speaking certain truths.*
Cosby exposed brutal truths we could agree with-that is when he was America’s father. Deon won’t screw up like that. He will however have to go up against Oregon and USC pretty quick.
There’s more. He’s an equal opportunity put-downer so the GOP should keep him at arms length. Like Bono.
That’s the transfer portal college athletes use to go to a different school.
Just call him ‘Butter’, cause he’s on a roll!..................
Conversely...having a college/university degree used to mean something. Now with a bunch of “studies” degrees, and the number of liberal arts/diversity courses a college degree is not as valuable as it once was.
LOL, sounds like, #FLH...
It started with my coach in Jr High and by the time that DI was in my face I won’t flinch, my eyes stayed straight ahead and even his colorful descriptions of my abilities, family tree and sexual prowess did not make me smile.
Most kids today need to get out, fall down and rub some dirt on it. Another lost lesson: Not everything that makes you feel bad is bullying. In my day it was called the school of hard knocks.
Thanks to every Coach out there!
From me, yes. :)
No different than what Bear Bryant did with The Junction Boys.
I had a FReeper tell me once something here once that I have never forgotten. “They aren’t diplomas. They are tuition receipts.” He nailed it.
I can’t believe 40 players walked out!...................
Kind of reminds me of Ali. A lot of folks were turned off by the flash and bluster, but he delivered. I enjoy ‘Prime Time’. I believe it was Troy Ackman that said you have to take him with a grain of salt.
Ali also was a Reagan supporter.
[snip] Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders... told the team that he was bringing his “Louis Vitton luggage” with him from Jackson and any player that didn’t like it should hit the portal. Over 40 players took up Sanders on that offer... “I think truth is good for the kids. We’re so busy lying we don’t even recognize the truth no more in society. We want everybody to feel good. That’s not the way life is,” he said, according to Fox News. “Now, it is my job to make sure I have what we need to win. That makes a lot of people feel good – winning does.” Sanders said anyone who let words run them off wasn’t fit for his program anyway. “If you went for that, if you were able to let words run you off, you ain’t for us because we’re an old-school staff. We coach hard. We coach tough. We’re disciplined. If you’re allowing verbiage to run you off because you don’t feel secure with your ability – you ain’t for us,” he said. [/snip]
