897: Pope Stephen VII, Cadaver Synod convener

In August 897 or so, the deposed Pope Stephen VII (or VI*) was executed (or just murdered) in prison by strangulation.

Details, you see, are thin on the ground here in the so-called Dark Ages. Rome has come down a bit in the world....

While the popes of the 10th century would really set that prostituted standard with the period known as the “pornocracy”, Stephen VI(I) makes everybody’s bad popes lists with one of the papacy’s all-time embarrassing events: the Cadaver Synod.

The pontiff at this point is no global media celebrity but an ensemble character captive to the the disreputable politics of a shrunken, malarial borough. Stephen’s predecessor Formosus had been one of the city’s “Carolingian” faction backing the withering remains of Charlemagne’s once-great line.

At loggerheads with the Italian Spoleto family claiming the Holy Roman Emperor title for the anti-Carolingians, Formosus had invited an illegitimate Frankish scion to roll down the Italian peninsula and take it from them — which is exactly what happened.

Two months after Formosus crowned this Carolingian, Arnulf by name, as “Augustus” in Rome, Formosus died while Arnulf was on his way back to Bavaria … putting the Spoletos back in charge. After a brief interregnum papacy, the Spoleto-backed anti-Carolingian prelate Stephen ascended St. Peter‘s throne.....

History
repeats
itself.

What an odd religion.

Not a religion then. It was a government.

ROTFLMAO!!!!

“The Cadaver Synod and related events took place during a period of political instability in Italy. This period, which lasted from the middle of the 9th century to the middle of the 10th century,”

...and continues on well into the 21st century....

All from men who are supposed to be Christ’s stand in here on earth.

This is an example of the *holy* Catholic church. And God is supposed to be *protecting* it?

He clearly is ... here we are, after all these years, in spite of dungeon, fire, and sword ... and sometimes really bad leadership.

"Scoff" if you like ... but then beware of running other folks down as "scoffers".

That is a wonderful, thoughtful and TRUE answer.

Thank You, NM.

Thank you. The anti-Catholic simpletons are always waiting to be set off. I’m familiar with this story. Stephen’s actions were wicked to the nth degree. Depraved beyond belief. Perhaps he was nuts. A disgrace to the church. In an age, indeed, in the midst of millennia where unspeakable
Acts were committed against people.

But I also have to remark that I think the author considers himself quite the wordsmith, but his writing is actually pretty turgid

Mom I think the hundreds or thousands of child molestations overrides the horror of digging the guy up and trying him. We may have to do that with Biden.

So God has been protecting Hinduism, islam, Zoroastrianism, Jainism, Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism as well?

Because all of them save islam, are older than Catholicism.

If longevity is a sign of God protecting a religion, He sure has been busy.

Besides, with much of what has happened in the history of Catholicism, I don’t think GOD is protecting any of it. No way would He protect or give the appearance of giving His stamp of approval on such egregious evil and immorality.

The letters to the seven churches in the book of Revelation witness to that.

Absolutely, I do not see any of those acts representing Christ to the world correctly.

You’re welcome to your opinion.

That is a thin and meaningless answer.

Just because the RCC has continued to exist does not make it “good“.
A lot of things have continued to exist for thousands of years.

Some good, most bad.

Your religion is in the latter category. People are going to hell because of it.

And yet, still we stand.

If you read what the Apostle’s Creed says, it gives you an idea of what Catholicism is about.

We believe the tenets of the Church. NOT A MAN POSING AS POPE. NOT A MOVEMENT TO MOVE AWAY FROM THE BASIC BELIEFS...BUT THE TRUTHS, AS WE SEE THEM, AND...HERE’S THE KICKER...FAITH, YES FAITH, THAT IS OUR REALITY.

Aside from all the extraneous happenings...just as the bizarre clown show of trying to take down President Trump...
TRUTH WILL PREVAIL.

I speak for myself, but that is what keeps me a Catholic and sustains me.
