So as the title says, I'm looking for some help in relocating to South Carolina. Mostly with just getting a job; I shouldn't have much trouble finding a place to live. I'm in Brooklyn, NY and work in the security industry; a fire and life safety director to be specific. We're responsible for handling any emergency that happens in our building until the incident commander takes over. It's a huge responsibility. The lack of communication and general lack of professional behavior from a few managers that we work with has really soured me on the job as a whole, and I want out.
I'm looking to get back in to office administration. I'm more comfortable in an office, instead of being on alert for basically my whole shift, having to run to the fire command station every time an alarm happens. I do have some years as an administrative assistant; it's been a while, but it's not like I'd be going in blind and getting thrown to the wolves.
The security company I work for is terrible - you're basically on-call 24/7, and might be sent to another building, even if you're not certified for it. That's a big no-no as far as the fire department goes. Like if you're certified for a hotel, but you're in an office building, they want someone with the proper certification for that office building. I know it's also blowing them up, but they're flying by the seat of their pants, paying out overtime in cash. It's extremely poorly run, and they're taking on contracts they can't properly staff. It sucks and it's depressing, I'm not at all happy here.
I'm more than willing to learn new things, like software and skills. I'm not comfortable with making travel arrangements though; last time I went anywhere was to visit my friend in Charleston last summer, and that's why I want to move. South Carolina would be preferable, but I'm open to the whole of the south. Generally better weather, definitely nicer people, and a lower cost of living. It's also more aligned with my personal beliefs, which is why I'm on here despite having lived in Brooklyn for most of my 37 years.
Any help would be hugely appreciated, as you'd be helping a fellow FReeper achieve their goals and restart life.
Just stay away from tornado alley!!
You best check how lenient they are on chronic violent criminals for multiple probations. They were conned by libtards to be like Cali.
Lol...when I moved to Texas I had to slow down my pace of speaking to about one third my normal tempo...
Welcome to the South.
Grits are good, but you don’t put syrup on them.
Buy an inexpensive smoker and start practicing.
If you decide to buy/own guns, you go to the gun store, get the NICS check and leave with one.
F150, Silverado, Ram….pick your flavor.
And start reading up on college football
Same can be said for far too many places in the South, now. Truly sad.
Good luck with your search.
I went to visit my friend in Charleston last summer; it was pretty hot. I’m used to hot and humid summers up here. Charleston was gorgeous, the city proper had a small-town feel, and it felt great. I was in a city, but not surrounded by skyscrapers, garbage and crappy people. It was overall a wonderful experience.
My certificate of completion for fire and life safety director is the only ‘certification’ I have. I want to get out of it though; besides, I’d need to get that city’s licenses. I wouldn’t be able to work without it.
My hair stylist’s son went to Huntsville with his girlfriend, who is from there. He is from Arizona. The day after they arrived, he walked into a medical manufacturing company and asked if they had any positions for delivery drivers (which he had been doing in AZ). They hired him on the spot.

Normality can change for sure. Also take into account the
foreigners that you are accustomed to being with will most
likely change also. They are wading across the Rio Grande
by the truck loads. Fortunately they are being shipped out
of state by the bus/truck loads. We are currently in North
Carolina and they are here by the bus loads during crop
planting and harvesting season. Also a lot of them have
their wife and children with them. Rest on Sunday and back
to the for planting/tending/harvesting...When I moved from
Texas I had to slow down my pace of speaking to about one
third of my normal tempo... But it is nice here and learning
about a new culture is interesting.
And yeah, now Raleigh is the place where a middle-aged D-bag wearing spandex and riding on an $8,000 bicycle will set fire to the Trump sign in your yard.

Sounds like the D-bag found a way to make some cash.
My sister in law is a DY and she crosses the boundaries all the time to the point that my brother will not take her to family reunions or introduce her to the Southern side of the family. They’ve been married 12+ years and she’s still never met any of them. Hell, she even offended the West coast side of the family because she’s so damn obnoxious.
I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it either, but found it to be somewhat humorous & informative. Most people I know would not get upset over someone casually teasing them about their southern accent. Besides, there is a wide range of so-called Southern accents. Someone from Dallas is going to sound different than a person from west Texas or Mississippi.
Opposite for my brothers and me. When I was 15, our family moved from Houston to Bark River, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. I could only understand a third, eh?
Like Asheville, NC.
Admittedly, Southerners may tend to stonewall Yankee applicants. We get tired of Yankees coming down here, clogging up the roads, because even the best of them have a tendency to tell us what to do and how to live.
Good advice. Never bad mouth anything in a job interview.
One thing to keep in mind is they Charjeston and surrounding areas Luke Daniel Island, Mt Pleasant, Sullivsns Island are some of the most expensive real estate in the country. Look on Redfin fior housing to get an idea. Maybe try Summerville, Goose Creek, West Ashley or Columbia.
