Aug. 19—STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island resident Brett Roses was confused and concerned when he saw mysterious E-ZPass charges for his green 2002 Acura, a vehicle that has never left Staten Island.
According to Streets Blog NYC, after a seemingly endless cycle of disputing E-ZPass charges and getting billed all over again, Roses noticed on a New Jersey Turnpike Authority ticket that the car pinning him with all of these false charges wasn't his at all. It was a white BMW.
Roses went to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to clear up any confusion, but found that this was more than an innocent mistake.
The owner of the white BMW had tampered with its license plate, changing a number, to make their plate appear to match Roses'.
Roses was told his only option, in order to stop getting falsely billed once and for all, would be to re-register his car under a new plate number — but that would cost him $210.
"If he's tampering with a license plate, I would think that that would be a criminal offense," Roses told Streets Blog NYC. "He's not just stealing money from me, he's stealing money from the city. But (the police) didn't really look into it at all, they just called the dad, told him to stop, thought that that was it and then they closed the case," Roses told Streets Blog NYC.

Reading all the comments, I have to say in Texas, if you are in the right, the DMV will give you everything you need to use against the toll authority and remind you that no matter what they say you do not have to pay. At least that was some years ago . . .
NYPD Blue was one of the best TV shows ever made, in my opinion. Sipowicz was one of a kind, and all the other noteworthy characters were memorable in their own ways. Good writing, directing, and acting all around.
Unbelievable, isn’t it? DMV tells the poor victim to spend his $210 to “fix” the problem.
We moved to Idaho from California and had the same experience — our annual car registration costs dropped by 80% to 85%. That’s a huge help in retirement.
The big plus was everybody at DMV spoke English and have that Idaho kindness.
It used to be an act of FELONY MAIL FRAUD to knowingly send a Fraudulent Invoice thru the US Mail to ANYONE. File a Criminal Complaint with the Postmaster General.
It is excellent, and hasn’t lost anything in spite of the decades since it was new. It’s more raw and honest than the crap being put out now.
Until recently, you could BUY a driver’s license in Massachusetts. Speaking Spanish eased the process.
That point noted, it is a reasonable thing to do to slow down in construction zones, although doing do increases the risk of being smashed into by other drivers.
