Toll dodger altered his license plate number -- sticking New Yorker with his E-ZPass bills

Aug. 19—STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island resident Brett Roses was confused and concerned when he saw mysterious E-ZPass charges for his green 2002 Acura, a vehicle that has never left Staten Island.

According to Streets Blog NYC, after a seemingly endless cycle of disputing E-ZPass charges and getting billed all over again, Roses noticed on a New Jersey Turnpike Authority ticket that the car pinning him with all of these false charges wasn't his at all. It was a white BMW.

Roses went to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to clear up any confusion, but found that this was more than an innocent mistake.

The owner of the white BMW had tampered with its license plate, changing a number, to make their plate appear to match Roses'.

Roses was told his only option, in order to stop getting falsely billed once and for all, would be to re-register his car under a new plate number — but that would cost him $210.

"If he's tampering with a license plate, I would think that that would be a criminal offense," Roses told Streets Blog NYC. "He's not just stealing money from me, he's stealing money from the city. But (the police) didn't really look into it at all, they just called the dad, told him to stop, thought that that was it and then they closed the case," Roses told Streets Blog NYC.

Classic government shirking their responsibilities, putting the onus on the victim to fix the issue.

Not quite as bad as enabling squatters to illegally take over property, but in the same vein.

Wife had an old episode of Blue Bloods on TV. Made me think. Procedural police shows like that can’t be made any longer.

No longer represents reality.

Anyone expect the DMV to do what’s right? They have a playbook complete with flowcharts, to document how to F everything up.

This happened to a coworker. The false charges were on I-95 between Washington, DC and New Jersey. Maryland had her re-register her car.

Recently, I replaced a plate on which the paint was flaking off and looked bad. The new plate was a different number, and it cost me a paltry $11.00. That was Pennsylvania, though, not New York. Big difference.

What strikes me is how lazy the imposter was. If I was inclined to try a stunt like that, I would drive around until I saw a car of the same make and model as mine and use that license plate number.

I agree the cops behavior was atrocious. When my father died, he left his car parked in an alternate side of the street parking spot in Long Island City, Queens. No one in the family knew where it was. The cops called the house instead of towing it after several violations. The police officer was very polite.

A few years ago, my main vehicle was a Ford Expedition, one day I got a piece of mail from the DMV, it has a picture of a Mercedes going thru a toll in South Florida and not paying me I was being fined for not paying the toll.

The tag reader for some reason confused the tag of the person in the Mercedes with my tag number, I sent in a letter with information confirming that I was not in South Florida at the time and that I did not own a Mercedes, maybe I was lucky but it all got straightened out.

“Classic government shirking their responsibilities, putting the onus on the victim to fix the issue.”

Yet everyday we hear more demands for government to exert more control over every facet of our lives.

Government workers serve the system, not the people.

We moved from CA to TN in 2010. Walking out of the Clerk’s Office we started laughing. $36. In CA, it had been almost $400 for the same cars.

The DMV is the embodiment of all that’s wrong with every branch of the government.

It makes us all more aware of it because we are forced to interact with it and deal with the consequences of it.

We’ve been binge watching old NYPD Blue. Things certainly HAVE changed. There probably aren’t many Sipowitz tuneups happening now.

It is interesting at how extreme the racism by blacks was then, especially within the police force.

“That was Pennsylvania, though, not New York. Big difference.”

Not the only big difference, in PA it only costs $20 for a photo ID for a valid carry permit and it's good for 5 years.

In NY, pistol carry permits are almost impossible to get, and it will cost hundreds if not thousands for a lawyer to get one.

NY is a high tax, voter unfriendly state and it is not surprising that multiple thousands of NYers are leaving for other states.

Both states cheat the pubbie voters and brazenly do it in open view, with no fear of being caught.

I just renewed a carry permit here in GA. Am now in a Republican majority county. My old county, it was always a PITB to deal with that office. Here, it took about 15 minutes, $31, and I was out of there. The extra $1 was for a temporary paper permit. I was there on a Monday a little before noon. I got my permanent card in the mail on *Wednesday*!

My prior Dem county took like a month or more. I think they were intentionally slow-walking them, the last time I renewed.

All true re NY. My family’s roots are in conservative rural western NYS. Hundreds still live there and are just scraping by. They can’t even afford to leave. If they could afford it they can’t bear to leave family behind.

I grew up there and the small town was a great place to live. When I visit, it’s not America.

I got a bill for using a toll road in Texas. It took about three phone calls to get ahold of a guy who handles toll fraud in Texas. I got him to call up the photo, told him I hadn’t been to Texas in a decade, and I was concerned someone was running around Texas with a license plate made to look like mine. He said okay and that was that. Never heard another word.

It’s important that if something like this happens that you pursue it until it is resolved. Even though I live in Florida and it’s unlikely I’ll drive through Texas again, the states enforce each other’s fines. Florida can seize my driver’s license until I pay a fine from Texas. (Or, anywhere else.) To reinstate the license is a huge hassle and costs $450 regardless of why it was erroneously cancelled. If you get a bill or notice from another state, you MUST resolve it before it cascade’s into a real disaster.

Be careful in slow go zones in Virginia. The state has authorized cameras. 100.00 non-moving violation fine payable in 30 days or 2 points on your license. I was moving the same speed in packed traffic in a construction zone in Suffolk and there was no sign notification. I got a ticket about a week later. I have been told cities across the state are purchasing cameras. From a news report Suffolk county is placing them in all school zones and work zones about 50 cameras.
