There is no issue with the water now, that goes back decades. The issue was never Lejeune it was local businesses dumping chemicals.

Something like this happened in CA a few years ago. Gardeners on their lunch hour in a hot day dozed off in their car and died. I think the windows were shut. I do not know if the car was running.

Hampstead is South of J’Ville about 18 miles from downtown Wilmington. Probably partying in Wilmington if that is what they were doing. Our evening temps are relatively mild around the mid-seventies. I suspected fentanyl but CO2 poisoning is a possibility if the AC was on and no outside air coming in.

The Speedway Gas Station where they were found is located a block or two south of the Intersection of Highway 17 and NC 210 in Hampstead. Hampstead is just north of Wilmington. No doubt the lads were on the way back from Liberty in Wilmington and stopped to sleep it off. Sad.

Thx for the clarification on Hampstead, NC. My familiarity w/ the area goes back to the 1950’s and early 1960’s; so, I wasn't familiar with that town. Checking the map, I see it's down near Topsail.

At any rate, I well remember the heat and humidity in SE NC (pre-air conditioning in my days there); so, I can well imagine how this might have happened. Very sad for their families. RIP young Marines; on to guard the gates of Heaven w/so many others who went before them.

"Authorities have confirmed that the deaths of three Marine lance corporals, Lance Cpl. Tanner J. Kaltenberg (19) from Madison, Wisconsin, Lance Cpl. Merax C. Dockery (23) from Pottawatomie, Oklahoma, and Lance Cpl. Ivan R. Garcia (23) from Naples, Florida, were the result of carbon monoxide poisoning."
