My senior citizen father has donated to numerous GOP candidates and causes on email solicitation and texting.
Numerous charges are being brought by an organization billed as "Win Red" they send emails that link the option to edit your account or amounts you're donating. However the links lead to dead ends, there is no way to get a password reset to try and delete donations. We have cancelled credit cards, changed debit cards and seemingly nothing is stopping automated donations monthly.
Has anyone had experience with this, has to be, criminal fundraising by the GOP? Because it looks and sounds pretty damn official.
It used to be that if you had automatic payments you had to update your credit or debit card information when you received a replacement for a stolen card or the date changed. I ran into this a few years ago with an anti-virus subscription I no longer used. Tried changing the credit card by reporting the old ones stolen and got a brand new card number. I still got billed for the renewal. Finally just closed that card and opened a new one with a different company. As someone mentioned, try talking to the institution that issued the card, but good luck.
That is very difficult to do, as almost all GOP candidate websites send would-be donors to WinRed.
Canceling a card will definitely stop the problem, however it sounds like somehow they got a hold of debit card information. And merely changing the card number (as in reporting an old one as stolen) won't cancel automatic payments. It used to work that way, and then you'd have to update all your automated payments. Now the card companies do it for you. So changing card numbers does nothing.
I tried talking to a card issuer when we had the problem a few years ago with Avast auto-renewal. The issuer basically said I had to cancel through the billing company because we had signed up for auto-renewal. Well, long story not much shorter, during the time we had avast, we changed emails and the old one got forgotten about and we could never get anyone to talk to at Avast about getting the email on the Avast account fixed because they wanted to send reset links to the old email that we couldn't use anymore. So we called the credit card company back and closed the account permanently. When asked why, we told them it was because they wouldn't drop the auto-renewal at our request.
Never join any political party and never donate to any charity except anonymously. Otherwise, you will be hounded for life to give more.
That is so true. I donated to the Republican party years ago, and was getting four calls per day on my landline asking for donations. It was abusive. They ruin any chance of getting any more donations due to the constant phone calls. Now, I don’t donate a cent and ignore the landline calls because anyone who I know who needs to talk with me uses my cell number. The calls have dramatically gone down since.
The other phone calls that irritate me is the police union calling for donations. Yes, their job is dangerous but the benefits, salary of police officers are better than the private sector. Luckily, those calls also go to my landline.
“But WinRed is a corrupt, evil collection of snot-nosed grifting “consultants” and “operatives”. May they receive their just reward.
Winred is AWFUL!!! If you read their Terms Of Service, you discover they’re allowed to immediately sell ALL of your information to anyone they choose!!! No opt-out!
I donated to several candidates last election and now get5-8 unsolicited texts from odd numbers daily, begging for $. It’s AWFUL!!!
I HATE WINRED!!!!
I actually mailed Trump a check, as it’s the only way to not allow your privacy to be violated. Now, most candidates don’t even have that option (mail a check) on their websites. It’s all WinRed.
I’ll never use WinRed again, and tell everyone I know not to use it.
R’s are idiots, as usual.
IL just donated to what I thought was a direct Trump website.
Afterwards I checked the internet and found this was more of a scam than anything and contacted my credit card company to cancel the charge. I have to wait until the charge is actually posted to my account.
I tried to contact the Win Red telephone number but unsuccessful.
I will cancel the charge and will then have to contend with the calls I will receive as a result of WinRed’s selling my contact information. That will be my penance for having jumped when I saw something that looked like it was authorized by Donald J Trump.
Steer clear!
