Radio talk show hostess Kim Komando recently researched the shopping app Temu. She says her research set off some alarms and warns the public to be cautious if they are using this China-based company.
Seemingly overnight, everyone’s talking about Temu (pronounced “tee-moo”), an online shopping app that boasts deals that seem too good to be true, like $17 wireless earbuds, $1 “gold” necklaces, and $23 wedding dresses.
Over 50 million Americans have downloaded Temu since it launched state-side in September 2022, after it gained traction with expensive Super Bowl ads promising to let you “shop like a billionaire.”
Today, Temu is the most popular shopping app in the U.S., behind Amazon. But most of us know little about the App’s origins.
Reader Daniel Mayer asked, “Is [Temu] something we should be concerned about?”
I did some digging. And as it turns out, yes, you absolutely should be. Here’s what I found:
Where did Temu come from?
This isn’t some fly-by-night operation. Temu is based in Boston, Massachusetts, by PDD Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: PDD). PDD is headquartered in Shanghai, China. PDD also owns the e-commerce platform Pinduoduo headquartered in — you guessed it — China. So, Temu is a Communist China-based app and site.

They ship for free because of some globalist rule about developing nations.
Slave labor and free shipping make cheap junk cheap.
We use Temu. My Chinese wife like it.
Often it is EXACTLY the same stuff on Amazon or Walmart.com but for far less money.

My first, and only order was delivered quickly, and everything as advertised. Still skeptical.

The discount shopping site gathers a broad array of data, including personal information such as names, addresses, phone numbers, birthdays, and social media profiles, as well as technical data such as operating systems, IP addresses, and GPS locations (if allowed).
Alarmingly, Temu’s data collection doesn’t end there. The app also amasses information from third-party sources, including sellers on its platform, public records, social media, data brokers, credit bureaus, and marketing partners, adding more layers to its data mining activities.
Recently, Temu was accused by the U.S. of potential data risks after its sister site, e-commerce platform Pinduoduo, was suspended by Google for containing malware.
Cybersecurity researchers found it wasn’t just tracking device info and activity – malicious code allowed it to bypass cellphone security settings to spy on other apps, read notifications and messages, and even change settings.
Temu gains full access to all your contacts, calendars, and photo albums, plus all your social media accounts, chats, and texts. In other words, literally everything on your phone.
And you do not have to buy wholesale amounts.
We have been pleased with the service selection.
Warnings about them tracking people are laughable because the banks, and US government already does that. As if the leaders in the PRC care what sneakers or t-shirts I wear.
I bought 5 beach hoodies from Temu They are basically very light weight, long-sleeve t-shirts with a hood They keep the sun off my arms and are long enough to conceal the GP-100 holstered at my 6-o’clock. They provide a great casual solution to concealing a rather large pistol. I paid $9.68 for each of them
Temu is worth looking at. I bet they are far less woke than Amazon or Walmart.

Well, Ali Baba Express is the consumer version of Ali Baba where you can buy non-wholesale quantities. It’s similar to Amazon but the merchandise is exclusively Chinese. It would be interesting to see how Temu differs from ABE. I know Jack Ma fell out of favor with the Chinese government. I wonder if Temu may in same way be the state-approved replacement for ABE.
When things cost less than they should, what they are selling you isn’t their product. You are their product for someone else.
Gotta love and admire Kim Komando. She’s been a student of the world of computers since they first became available for public consumption. She was in college at the time she first got into it.
She has a TV face with a radio voice.
Sounds like the Wish app. They sell fake Leupold rifle scopes for a fraction of what a real Leupold sells for. It also has a fraction of the quality of a Leupold.
Read the article. You are giving them much more info than just your name and address.
My goodness! I figured Temu was some type of personal info gathering site masquerading as an inexpensive shopping source. Their ads pop up on web pages non-stop and all the descriptions are written in Chinese. Some of the items I can’t identify and since I can’t read the description, I have no idea what they are actually selling. I’m wondering, “Why does someone think I need that?”
I would never order from that company and just assumed others thought much the same.
I bought lots of Christmas gifts from them and was satisfied with the merchandise I received.
Half the price of Ebay for many goods (like bike seat covers, hose clamps, etc.) , and much faster shipping, and often even much cheaptr thanb you’re buying goods directly from manufacturers in China and other parts of the world. All from China anyway.
That’s why shipping times are often 12 days or longer.Versus approx. 20 for Ebay for Chinese goods.
The App is a clever, pervasive digital stalker.As do many others, and I would not recommend it, and only purchase on a Desktop=no app.
