The voters of San Francisco sure are willing to tolerate a very large amount of it.

They grabbed Pebble Beach golf course and GWB gave them the Panama Canal.
The Japanese bought Pebble Beach golf course back in the late 1980s I believe. It ended up being bought by a partnership consisting of Arnold Palmer, Clint Eastwood, and somebody else. I do not know if this point whether they still on there or where there’s been sold, but I’m not aware of the Chinese being involved.
What’s the problem ABC, you are getting exactly what you have been advocating for years? You ought to be down there in the midst of it all touting your success.

Panama took full control of the Panama Canal in 1999. Bush did not give away the canal to China.

late 99. the treaty that led to that took effect in 79, but there was a 20-year transition period then complete removal of US presence (military and PCC) late 99.
the US did try to negotiate for extending lease on howard, but what I was told is that it was intentionally sandbagged by panama side (crazy lease price demanded). I could guess who might have supported sabotaging those negotiations.
Difference, the Japanese were private buyers, with the Chinese, it’s strategic.
