16,437 views Apr 14, 2023 SACRAMENTO I've wanted one of these for years and while looking for something else found this one on Big Ship Salvage https://bigshipsalvage.com/ - they were up front and noted that it needed work. It's actually in very good condition. When it arrived I did some basic cleanup and replaced six of the bolts on it. I found a gear whose taper pin had sheared off and the good people at Langills Precision CNC https://langills.com/ got it replaced perfectly. There were also a few issues with the shutter/muffler assembly and some detailed cleanup and replacement of a small part resolved that issue. The gears and some of the bolts were lubricated with marine grease and the siren was assembled and everything worked great!
This particular siren appears to date to around 1938-1944. The wood handle is original to the machine.
At one of the elementary schools I attended, Glen Iris in Birmingham Alabama, they use done of these for alarm for fire drills!..............
I can only imagine those folks in London during The Blitz hearing those sirens, “Oh Geez, not this ____ again!”
Wow! That’s awesome! I always went to a school where the alarms and bells were just sounds from a speaker. There’s something special about hearing the real thing!
Wow! That’s the exact same model siren! Different color but the same model!
They would pick a boy, usually from the top in the class, and he would walk down the halls with a teacher while turning the crank. It had a neck and belt strap and was removable from the stand....
I just looked and the pics of Glen Iris School on the internet are not the same one I went to. It apparently has been remodeled or rebuilt. The one I attended in 1969 was circa 1930’s vintage school design..............
I’ll see your Black Sheep Squadron and raise you with the SCTV skit Air Dogs over the Pacific!

Thanks, but where was the hand cranked siren in that?
