What is a cult? What isn't a cult?
Reverend Jim Jones and his Marxist-Leninist People's Temple at the intersection of Jesus and Lenin one example.
Jones fancying himself a bit of both seemed to fit the description once the "Kool Aid was passed" and innocent people were gunned down in Guyana back in 1978.
In the Conservative Christian subculture I experienced a doctrinal clarity that meant questioning other religious groups from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to the Seventh Day Adventists not to mention Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims.
Then there was the Unification Church of Reverend Moon and beyond that other groups smaller in size.
The "Mormons" very much and ostracized and persecuted people in their early days driven all the way to "Deseret" (Utah).
I guess the "Good Christian Men" who imagined themselves with multiple wives were just so offended that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints actually allowed multiple wives back in those days.
The "Mormons" were attacked and steadily driven westwards.
Getting closer to the action the deadly encounter that started the siege and led to the inferno was a matter of federal gun law enforcement...

I stumbled on the real reason the Mormons were thrown out of Illinois in a book "The History of Banking" as sort of an aside.
In that era the country had yet to completely settle into a monetary system.
Banks, cities, states, etc., all had their own currencies as did the Mormon group in Illinois.
There were exchange rates, and if a business or person was paid for a service or product with money from one entity, he could exchange that for that of another.
Except when dealing with the Mormons.
When a person tried to redeem currency they had been paid by a Mormon at a Mormon bank, they were sent away, being told that the money was for the convenience of their members and worthless for anyone else.

The mormons also printed the first Three dollar bill, which later gave rise to the statement...”As queer as a three dollar bill.”
Once in Utah the mormons began raiding wagon trains. The most infamous raid was the Fancher train in which all the adults and some of the kids were massacred. Known today as the Mountain Meadows Massacre. They also made raids on the Miltmore and Shepherd wagon trains which no one hears about.
During the Civil War the pro-South Mormons also armed the Navajos and sent them to raid Union forts in that area, causing the Union to send in Kit Carson with troops to round up the tribes and move to the Bosque at Ft Sumner NM. The tribes still whine about that even today.
Follow The Money.
Mormons are a cult.
Does that mean we send the FBI and ATF after them? Some people got this attitude about the Branch Davidians using gun laws but probably also looking at them and saying under their Christian breaths “They’re a cult”.
I mean the “Christians” in the FBI or ATF.
Actually the Davidians *were* a cult. Doesn’t mean that they should have been burned alive.
Intellectually speaking I can accept that.
