“Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft” is definitely their weirdest song.

I did not know that. Thanks. Probably should have put that in my 10 greatest guitar solo list.

An accomplished drummer, and, accidental singer....IIRC, her brother’s band allowed her to chime in...and, the rest is history.

Not many realize that Karen Carpenter was a drummer as well as a singer. In fact, she played on some of the earlier Carpenters records but as they got famous, she concentrated on the singing and they brought studio drummers in.

Yes, very true... and Richard apparently was only letting her sit in as drummer ‘til he found a better fit. He was also looking for a lead singer and it was the other people in the band who told him.. ‘hey, your kid sister you have playing drums, she’s a pretty good singer...’ apparently before then he hadn’t really noticed her talents.

“Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft” is definitely their weirdest song. I remember that one. It was actually a cover of the band Klaatu, a Canadian band who had the original version of the song.
Interesting sidelight, when Klaatu put out the album containing this song ("3:47 EST"), there were a lot of rumors that Klaatu was actually the re-united Beatles, due to the psychedelic nature of the songs and the "Beatlesque" arrangements. "Sub-Rosa Subway" was another minor hit pulled from that album.

“Superstar.”
“Merry Christmas, Darling.”
“A Song for You.”
Unique voice. No one has come close.
Played their album “The Carpenters” repeatedly. Still love it.

Yes, ‘Superstar’ (written by Leon Russell) was my favorite too, but they had so many hits. “Close to you” will always make me smile.
(Russell gives credit to Delaney and Bonnie, who had the first version of the song, but according to Wiki, Rita Coolidge gets credit for the idea - a song about groupies)
A beautiful voice, a lovely lady and such a sad ending.

I remember they did a Carpenters tribute album back in the 90s, with modern groups doing their covers, when they asked the bands which song they wanted to cover they all said, “Superstar”. Sonic Youth ended up doing it.

The Carpenters (unknown at the time) won a “Battle of the Bands” at the Hollywood Bowl. Those were big in LA at the time.
The music executives wanted HER because of her voice - completely untrained and they’d never heard anything like it - not her brother.
She said they came as a duo or not at all. Glad she stood up for her brother, and the rest is history.
