Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Small arms, ATGMs, MANPADS, loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles, trailers and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it is not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

“Putin Can’t Win: New Western Insights Show Russia Won’t Claim Victory in Ukraine”

“A bold assessment from the Pentagon along with analysis that undermines conventional thinking about the Russian army presents a devastating bottom line for the would-be czar.”

“One of the military’s top officials on Tuesday offered the boldest assessment yet of the Kremlin’s dismal chances to succeed in its invasion of Ukraine ahead of a planned spring offensive that Russian President Vladimir Putin believes will break the stalemate there.

“Ukraine is not going to lose. There will be no loss of Ukraine,” Colin Kahl, the Defense Department’s undersecretary for policy and effectively the No. 3 civilian, told Congress on Tuesday morning. “Vladimir Putin hoped that would happen. It hasn’t happened. It’s not going to happen.”

Administration officials have previously asserted that, a year after the invasion, Putin has “already lost in Ukraine,” as President Joe Biden said earlier this month. But those assessments are based around the relative strengthening of Ukraine’s resistance and of the blocs that support it, chiefly NATO. And military officials have emphasized that, regardless of the outcome in Ukraine, Russia’s invasion has left it, as Kahl said Tuesday, “a shattered military power” requiring years of retrofitting to recover from the devastating effects of its invasion.

But the latest assessment from Kahl to a House Armed Services Committee inquiry into accountability for billions in U.S. assistance to Ukraine represented an evolution in those assessments. Not only has Russia created lasting damage for itself, but it no longer has the ability to succeed in any of the goals Putin has set for himself in Ukraine, he explained.

“Ukraine continues to maintain most of its territory. They’re fighting tenaciously. The Russians do not have the capacity, in my view, to take over Ukraine,” Kahl said in response to questioning from Michigan Republican Lisa McClain.”

-—> Incredible Video Of Soldier In Ukrainian Trench Totally Unfazed By Withering Fire <——
A video shows an soldier with superhuman composure milling about in a trench unfazed by automatic cannon fire and explosions all around them.

Excerpts:
The BTR-82A is seen firing its 30mm cannon, but it’s unclear if its crew is also employing the 7.62x54mm machine gun. In the course of the footage, there are at least three explosions around the dugout. However, it’s not clear if these are from the 30mm cannon’s high-explosive rounds or some other weapon, such as a shoulder-fired rocket launcher, being wielded by other forces nearby. At various points in the clip, an individual is seen on top of the BTR-82A behind the turret, but it’s not clear if they are also firing on the defenders.

On the other side of the firefight, one of the defenders is seen throughout the footage moving in the dugout in a calm and deliberate manner, apparently unfazed by the withering barrage impacting all around him. They barely flinch, if they do at all, when the explosions rock the trench and seem to just ignore a glowing red tracer round ricocheting and falling behind them at one point. Other ricochets can be seen going almost right over their head prompting similar indifference.

It’s not clear what they are doing out in the trench, but they do not appear to be attempting to return fire and could be trying to retrieve items from outside. What looks to be another individual gesturing to them from an adjacent alcove, which could be attached to a larger trench network, can be seen briefly at one point in the clip.

We don’t know what the outcome of this particular firefight was in the end or what happened to the defenders in the trench.

-—> Ukraine Is Using Guided Rockets With More Range Than HIMARS-Launched Ones <——
Though produced in small numbers, the Vilkha-M can reach targets 68-miles away with a much larger warhead than the M31s fired by HIMARS.
https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/ukraine-is-using-guided-rockets-with-more-range-than-himars-launched-ones

Excerpts:
With little fanfare, Ukraine has developed and used a guided artillery rocket in combat with a longer range and heavier warhead than the vaunted Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (GMLRS) munitions provided by the U.S. and allies.

Called the Vilkha-M, it is a modified 7.6m (25-foot) long Soviet BM-30 Smerch multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) artillery rocket.

The Vilkha-M has a range of 110km (68 miles) and a 300mm, 485-pound warhead that can hit targets with great accuracy, Ivan Vinnyk, first deputy head of the National Association of Ukrainian Defense Industries, told The War Zone Tuesday.

By comparison, the GMLRS munitions - fired by the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS and the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) provided to Ukraine - have a range of up to about 80km (about 50 miles) and a 227mm, 200-pound warhead.

“Yes, the Vilkha has been used in combat,” Vinnyk said ... Vinnyk told The War Zone that the Vilkha-M modification program began in 2018 and that about 100 units have been produced. They were first used in combat in May, 2022, he added.

Their precision, he said, is boosted by so-called “gas rudders” - scores of small holes emitting propellant - used to direct the missile on the target via GPS. While the Vilkha-M is said to be quite accurate and a precision munition, just how accurate isn’t disclosed at this time.

And there are plans underway, said Vinnyk, to modify the Vilkha-M to boost the range to 150km (about 93 miles). Vinnyk declined to specify exactly when the longer-range variants might be ready or how many will be produced. “Let’s say, hopefully just in time for the widely estimated date of counter-offensive on the south towards Azov Sea,

Trying to ascertain just how active Ukraine is when it comes to developing and fielding longer-range precision weapons of its own has been a murky proposition at best. There has been speculation that they could have revived their at one time fairly mature home-grown ballistic missile program, for instance. Regardless, Vilkha-M is a rare piece of evidence that Ukraine is very much capable and actively working on - while under constant assault - of bringing its own long-range, hard-hitting weapons to the fight, even if in limited numbers.

•Day 371.

Today the Russians are experiencing the second wave of the biggest drone attack combined with a cyber-attack that they have seen.

Ukrainians are reportedly attacking objects from St. Petersburg to Krasnodar, which is a 2 thousand-kilometer front line in the air.

The first target of the drone attack became Russian objects in Belgorod, most likely the oil refinery plant.

The attack happened at night, so there is no footage of the flying drones, but Russians claimed that all drones were successfully neutralized by means of Electronic Warfare systems.

Russian sources reported that they successfully hijacked drones’ geolocation which caused the drones to crush on the residential area in Belgorod.

It looks like the implementation of such measures was expected, which is why the Ukrainians reportedly used a very sophisticated tactic.

First, they used at least 4 drones, launching them from different directions to increase the chance that they spot an unprotected area.

Second, they programmed them to fly at a very low altitude to avoid being detected.

Third, as revealed later, these drones were manually assembled from different parts, which means that they likely used different frequencies in order to complicate hijacking if the drones get detected.

Lastly, Ukrainians have also reportedly accompanied the drone attack with a cyberattack on the Russian regional missile detection system. The second target became the oil refinery plant in Tuapse.

The tactic was the same: they launched at least 3 drones from different directions, the drones were different, and the attack was also accompanied by a cyberattack on the Russian regional missile detection system. One drone never reached the target and crushed dozens of kilometers away from the target.

Two drones managed to reach the oil refinery but missed the oil tanks and hit the infrastructure nearby. This is unfortunate but not surprising because these vehicles are not very precise.

The third target became the gas-compressing station near Moscow. Russian sources reported that there was only 1 drone of a unique model that was not used in other strikes.

The Russians have also closed the sky near St. Petersburg. After Russian detection systems were set off, Russians reportedly used interceptor jets to eliminate the threat.

The action took place far from the city, so there was no footage, and the local authorities just said that they conducted some training.

The fact that Ukrainian Forces are not promoting any attacks and Russians are trying to hide everything that was not spotted by the public means that the drone attack had a much greater scale.

Today, Ukrainians reportedly launched a second wave of drones, mostly targeting Crimea but also Belgorod.

In Belgorod, Ukrainians reportedly launched at least 4 drones. 3 of them successfully hit the communication tower.

In Crimea, Ukrainians reportedly launched at least 15 drones from different locations and mostly targeted Russian airfields.

The drones had different trajectories, so each of them landed in different places. Those that headed through the center were shot down, confirming that Russians are still concentrating their air defense in this region. Other drones reached Saky and the main transportation route to Kherson.

It was discovered that Russians have greatly improved their Electronic Warfare because usually, these drones were shot down, but this time at least 8 of them were highjacked, introducing a new challenge. As you can see, the scale of the attack is massive.

The opinions regarding these attacks differ. Some analysts are saying that Ukrainians are just testing Russian air and electronic defense systems and are creating an elaborate map for building more sophisticated trajectories.

After they finish, these analysts are predicting a much larger scale attack, which would cause a lot of destruction of the airfields as well as oil refineries and factories producing military equipment.

The second camp of analysts is saying that the goal of these attacks is to disperse Russian air defense that has been greatly concentrated on the fronts. By dispersing Russian air defense, Ukrainians would be weakening certain fronts and slowly setting conditions for a counteroffensive operation.

Ukrainians are effectively presenting Russians with a dilemma - either they keep their air defense on the front and allow the Ukrainian drones to continuously hit Russian objects and cause enormous social discontent and panic, or they pull their air defense away from the front to keep their public less distressed and increase the chance that the Ukrainian counteroffensive will be successful.

So, if the Kremlin does not protect the public, it may lose its power or even suffer a coup.

And if the Kremlin does not protect the front, then one day, Ukrainians will conduct massive strikes on Russian headquarters, communication centers, and warehouses, cause panic in the rear, and set perfect conditions for launching a large-scale attack.

Precision is boosted by so-called “gas rudders” - scores of small holes emitting propellant - used to direct the missile on the target via GPS.

The picture below shows the rocket container/loader (complete with rust):

Obviously, the technical challenge is adding GPS guidance.
